Thread regarding Sears layoffs

NY State A&E Techs

Are we considered essential employees going into people's homes and repairing their appliances? The order was put out that 100% workforce to stay at home. I've tried getting in touch with any and all management with no answers back. As far as I'm concerned I'm filing for unemployment Monday morning. If anyone works in a&e in the shutdown states please let me know if we're considered essential. Thanks

I asked my manager earlier today if we were considered "essential" and I was told we were. But I'm still getting calls for ice makers and water dispensers. As for cleaning supplies, I was told I could put a few on the company card. It's a nice sentiment, but I have to drive to a Dollar General in the middle of nowhere just to find a spray bottle of disinfectant.

As far as whether the company cares or not, they don't. The way they see it, everyone works out of their vans. So if one of their employees gets it and spreads it to the customers (the majority I see are old enough to tell me about seeing houses for sale in the Sears catalogues), it's no skin of their backs.

Technically according to how NY classifies essential if you provide service to another essential business, residence or conduct emergency repairs (which I suppose would be fixing necessary appliances) you’re considered essential.

You are supposed to provide social distancing in such cases.

Absolutely no idea how this works if someone is in quarantine. I believe A&E had to request the essential designation (they probably already did years and years ago when it was still an important business).

I am not sure you can apply for unemployment just for not showing up if they are operating but I think Cuomo indicated they have to provide job security if you don’t show up. You may be able to take an unpaid vacation.

Please repair the smart appliances remotely. For the older ones you still need to visit the home.

Our overly religious Manager held a safety meeting last week and never once mentioned Coronavirus.
He said the same thing and it was a text went out to techs specifying that.
If people are self quarantine and we enter they’re homes, doesn’t that erase the whole clean room/quarantine awareness?
Money, Money, Money I guess

Not in anyway essential. Medical staff, food chain supply, food manufacturing, grocery retail, police, etc but not a repair guy.
