It was so cool to get those long receipts with small freebies like a box of tissues or a package of cotton balls. Sometimes other offers could be combined with coupons to get stuff for free or almost free. Of course the best offers were the straight up 5 off of 5 or 10 off of 10......just plain free stuff ! Restrictions were eventually put in to make the deals tougher, but that just made it more fun to try to make them work ! Come back kmart !

Yepp. Margins were already tight. SYWR diminished margins even further
Big Lots and Dollar General have the same crazy offers. Yet somehow they have 1,500 stores and 15,000 stores respectively. The offers and discounts didn't k–l Kmart, it was regressive customer service and empty shelves. When it takes a month to replenish toothpaste, paper towels and laundry detergent, shoppers go elsewhere.
SYW expedited the death of Sears and Kmart, but it was great for deals.
