Thread regarding Alaska Airlines layoffs

I'm plesently suprised nobody is mentioning layoffs

At least not yet. From what I saw so far, the things that are being done or considered include a hiring freeze, borrowing money to get us through the following few months, and suspending share repurchases.

I'm a little worried about the unpaid leave of absence being offered. I wouldn't mind taking it, but I think it's risky. Might put me at the top of the list when layoffs become an option, since I'd already be out...

It's waaaaay to early to feel comfortable about 'no layoffs.' Think about it...due to the unprecedented mass shutdown of so many businesses, both businesses and millions of everyday people will NOT have the financial resources to travel by air for a long time, even if everything got back to "normal" by April. Air travel truly is a 'luxury' and NOT a necessity for 90% of the world. Businesses (including government) can get work done effectively by teleconferencing or video conferencing, via email or text, via driving vice flying, etc.

Paying for air travel is truly DISCRETIONARY spending for most, i.e. it's NOT an absolute necessity.

Air travel and aviation related industries will be impacted for a LONG time, and layoffs are a virtual certainty
