Thread regarding Broadcom Corp. layoffs

No coronavirus reprieve

Looks like there are plans for major layoffs at Broadcom in the works in the next several weeks to a month. And apparently nobody is safe. It's great to know we have one more thing to worry about when things are extra stressful as it is. We'll see how it pans out in the end, I guess.

Hey ahole why don’t you give me work that can actually fill the day?

Broadcom work is easy. Takes me about 2 hours a day. The remainder of day I watch my kids, do laundry, watch Netflix.

If I was in the office I would be taking a 2 hour lunch, walks, uncountable number of coffee breaks, gym and water cooler talk of course

“ I love all the id–ts talking about how you can be productive working from home.”

Wow. Mighty big words. Where are your facts? Another BSD wannabe...?

Just a small sampling below. Even IBM, when they mandated work in office published a study at the same time stating benefits of WFH.

Nobody is stating the whole Goddamn company should WFH. In the current scenario it’s an issue of mitigating risk and safety. Absent COVID it’s an option that many companies offer today.

Oh well...

I love all the id–ts talking about how you can be productive working from home. If you are not a manager responsible for your groups deliverables, you have no idea. People working from home are not as effective as working from the office in general. That is just a statement of fact. To truly be productive working from home, you need the right job responsibility and the right person to be as productively working from home

Yea right you are not a recruiter. But you should have also said, “us citizens need not apply” Apple discriminates hiring Americans . Apple will hire a lower qualified person if they need H1b sponsorship. Apple likes to dangle a green card to make slaves out of the work force. Apple is a c-appy place to work, zero work life balance. citizens would quit the first week. Only slaves with no where else to go would put up with that

@xnys+1421VKso Here ...

Some across ES org were given until end of next week and some end of June. I didn’t ask why the delay or how the end dates were decided. I received my HR letter stating my role was terminated as well as the original paperwork from the CA acquisition providing details for termed roles. I can hang out for a couple months and keep collecting an easy paycheck during my transition. If I get screwed, I’ll worry about it then.

Why through June? Are you getting transition pay? If they are paying a big severance why not cut you a check and send you on your way? It’s as if they want you to f up during this period so they don’t have to pay the severance

ES/CA. Just got my notice. I have until end of June. Boss said come in during weeks I’m on the covid rotation and collect my stock/bonus payout. Encouraged to hear him say badge in and do whatever. Only sticking it out because my severance will carry me for quite a while. It’s been fun. I really did enjoy my work. Hopefully I can keep germ free until the end!

As far as PPE...there is no f—ing way I’m going into an office unless those f—ers have masks.

What is interesting is the propaganda and persuasion tactics used in promoting this

  • mention Octane's name a lot.
  • say this will help the local economy going back
  • tie this to being patriotic.

Expect to see more of the same going forward

@vexx+1421VKso This was specifically addressed. Broadcom is primarily a hardware company, unlike the other companies people keep using as examples. At fab sites almost everyone is coming in. They want to treat people equally. They never had a work from home policy, and apparently they don't want to have one in the future. The workplace in not a democracy. It's not a slave plantation either. If you don't like it you are free to leave.

@vexx+1421VKso WINNER! You hit the nail on the head. All of the decent tech firms are WFH now, including mine.

Best of luck to my former Broadcom colleagues. hope they have plenty of masks and Clorox bleach! Bring some Lysol in too so you spray the c-ap out of the area you’re sitting around.

And pray that the dummies set up the HVAC to bring in fresh air, cause if they don’t you’ll just be breathing in the aerosols...cause I doubt you’re getting anything close to N95’s....

Rules to survive:
1) wear gloves until you sit ur arse down for the day.
2) bring a big arse water bottle from home
3) bring a pee bottle so u don’t need to use the bathroom...(aim carefully!)
4) wipe anything you may touch wherever ur sitting
5) bring ur lunch but don’t touch the food
6) quarantine yourself when you get home...odds are 25% of your coworkers are asymptomatic increasing the odds you may be f—ed...
7) make sure you’re at least 30 feet away from some other knucklehead sitting nearby
8) if anyone coughs or sneezes, shoot them
9) if there’s no PPE, badge-in turn around a go home..
10) if you have the slightest ill feeling, stay the f— home

Godspeed to you all

What is the point 1 week a month? All large tech companies are WFH. Facebook is even handing out cash and Exceeds rating for this review period. That is in addition to 100% WFH through at least May. Broadcom just doesn’t want employees to get comfortable working from home. Or prove that their office productivity is equivalent to WFH... because then employees will ask for more WFH once this covid is over

My god, what a bunch of pathetic whiners you all are. I can't believe some of the comments on the call yesterday. I suggest all of you get your head out of sand and be thankful you still have a paycheck. Companies all around the world are doing mass layoffs and/or huge pay cuts. Even doctors and nurses are facing pay cuts because hospitals can't doing any routine work, only emergencies. You're being asked to come in to a near empty office one week a month. Oh the horror. I guess you would rather be working for minimum wage at a grocery store and dealing directly with the public.

Post ID: @vqlp+1421VKso

Doesn't sound like this is allowed but I'm sure they will spin it. Probably the first big tech company to bring workers back. Can't wait to go into the office to sit at my desk, in a mask, eyeball anyone with the nerve to cough, and then go home. Essential !!!

Will all business offices and stores be required to close?

No. “Essential businesses” may keep their facilities open (and are strongly encouraged to keep them open) to continue providing essential services and products to the public. Employees may leave home to go to these jobs. But all businesses, including essential ones, are required to maximize the number of employees working from home and bring in only those employees who can’t carry out their job duties from home.

@vody+1421VKso Shelter in place doesn’t generally apply to “essential businesses”. So....get to office or one gets fired

The shelter in place is scheduled for May 3 and will likely be extended. They are needlessly pissing off employees with this cause it won't happen.

Even in the worst-struck states of the US, Broadcom is making people come into the office even when their work can productively and safely be done from home. They are justifying this by some mix of whitewashing about principles (clearly employees cannot be trusted to manage their own time or have a work ethic), and helping the economy. Both blatant BS. The harm that the company is doing to itself in the medium and long term by insisting on this heinous policy is colossal. It's an astonishingly effective way of stamping out motivation and loyalty instantly. Way to go, Broadcom!

These H1b workers are some of the laziest you will ever work with in your career. Indians and Chinese take care of their own. Full stop.

Indians and Chinese discriminate in hiring citizens. They are constantly scheming on ways to stab the person they just went on a lunch time walk with. I know because I was asked to help. They seriously have no soul and on a turn of a dime will be quick to steam roll you too. This political drama is how they provide the illusion of doing work. Often blaming others, taking credit for others work, out right telling lies.

Why are these people like this? They come from poor countries where they will do anything than going back to poverty. All their life they had to scheme to get and keep a job. That is the Indian and Chinese way.

The more they dominate numbers of hiring managers the more you hear there isn’t enough qualified talent. It’s a lie. It’s because that Indian manager doesn’t want to work with an American. Same with most other nationalities.

Before covid the White House was seriously considering raising H1b limit. Trump has become soft after having lunch with top tech. It’s sad. This covid Recession is a good thing. Nobody is going to increase H1b, in fact politicians want to suspend 100% of visa. This recession will also clear out thousands of existing Indians and Chinese that would otherwise discriminate against Americans for a generation.

I second the comment. Pack your bags.

Didn't mention that laying off permanent residents or citizens were preferred, simply just pointing out the WAY it was said by a poster. "Pack your bags?" It can be said or suggested in a more respectful way, these are people, not equipment or objects. I am a US Citizen by the way, and even if priorities are to be given to citizens, performance needs to be considered first. Broadcom is not a defense company. Even if thet were, performance and generating revenue needs to be considered first, no point in keeping anyone, regardless of their origin or place of nationality, over the bottom line, it's a business, not a political organization.

Post ID: @uulp+1421VKso

When I was in the US on an h1b I was laid off and had to leave the country. When times are hard it makes sense to prioritize citizens and permanent residents of a country over temporary visa holders.

Just because a visa is dual intent does not mean your visa isn't temporary until you get whatever permanent status the country you are in offers.

A lot of really mean folks on here.

Ex-Broadcom guy here.

Layoffs and being let go isn't just a Broadcom thing, but it's just a fact of life. But to point fingers at H1B holders and other fellow Broadcom employees is just downright mean. Everyone here really needs to be civil and understand that no one, citizen, resident, H1B, is safe from this economic collapse the WORLD is facing. Let's be nice and respectful to each other and if you can't do any of those two, then shut the f— up.

I wanted to just say to those people that are worried about their employment to keep your head up, you were once and still are at one point found to have a valuable talent and skill for you to be hired on at companies like Broadcom. I don't miss the business that Broadcom engages in, but I do miss the camaraderie at Broadcom.

Stay strong, ignore any rumors and haters, but do keep an eye out on the facts. I hope you all stay safe and hope to bump into you folks out there in our industry.

Much love and respect,

Fellow ex-Broadcom guy

What a remarkable density of baseless assumptions in that comment. That's given me a good giggle today.

CA is not a monolith. It's made up of a quite heterogeneous collection of products, teams and segments. No doubt there are parts and people for whom that comment is apt, but there are also plenty of others within CA for whom it's simply not true.

I do wonder what agenda is behind that comment. F—ging a mindset that will keep employees devoid of hope so that they keep plodding on at Broadcom perhaps?

If you don’t like it , quit. Who are you kidding really?? You have no talent except for knowledge of some crusty old CA products. Besides you are here on visa. Broadcom will tell you when your services are no longer needed. You don’t have the luxury to leave on your terms. Stop acting like you do, because you don’t.
