Summer internships?

Any idea how the severe drop in WTI will affect the summer internship program, if at all?

All industries have their ups and downs. Ours just tend to... overshoot in both directions. People get emotional at the bottom and top. The industry is fine; just a bit stressful at times. Take the job, consider something else later on.

If you're an engineering intern, go to law school.

Law students with engineering backgrounds can study/practice Patent Law.

Pays more than an engineer, is always in high demand, and you can work anywhere (not anchored to Midland for your entire life).

Plus, if you want to still want to end up working for Oxy you can always study bankruptcy law lol.

Get into another field. These cycles are ridiculous and I believe the industry will become more cutthroat as renewables take over in the coming years. Consider medical school. You would only need a few prerequisites.

Good advice below on touching base with right HR people. Also, great advice on finding another field. If you are smart enough to be a Engineer, Geologist, Geophysicist, or Petrophysicist go back to school and learn how to deal with Pandemics. You might make less money, but over the long haul you will avoid these ups and downs. All it takes is one OPEC or Russian price cut, or low demand and the industry is spinning out of control. In medical there were always be sick people that need your help.

if you are a petroleum engineer, I suggest you do a 180, forget about internship with an O&G company, stay in school, go for another major, keep your options broad and open, if you are of a different discipline than PE, be thankful, and either way, stay away from O&G, this is the most c-appiest field I have ever been in, unless you enjoy going through these cycles every 5 years or so. Be smart, reevaluate and reconsider.

If this does not serve as a deterrent to you, than by all means, join the herd!

Last I heard summer interns were still a go. However, pinging the recruitment team as suggested wouldn't be a bad idea.

I’m assuming you are an upcoming intern. If so, I would not consult these boards. Instead, reach out to your university’s Oxy recruitment team and ask for guidance from them.
