Thread regarding Hy-Vee layoffs

Hyvee cutbacks

Yesterday was a hard day for HyVee employees.
84 store directors were either "stepped down", with a 20% pay cut, or allowed to retire.
The stores affected will apparently be managed by other, nearby store directors.
In addition there appear to be other big changes looming, with many department manager positions being eliminated, and the management of those departments being tasked to other, existing store employees.
This once proud iconic symbol of mid-western hard work and high values is about to become another victim of "progress".
I, for one am saddened to see this happening.

Randy should be demoted from CEO to store manager. Also Jay should be demoted too. If Randy really cared about this company why doesn’t he take a pay cut to save Hy-Vee bottom dollar.

Randy = No college education no Business management, Finance, or Marketing. It’s a fact that more employees at HyVee have superior knowledge and are more in depth with a better sense of reality in retail than Randy. The ship is sinking.

Anger? Just wait until the ‘changes’ get started company wide. Good luck everyone.

How many employees does Hyvee have? 85,000...

And how many views on this thread (5,000)...

This anger is out of hand.

Directors are overpaid for the work they do. I would cap all directors and store managers to 100,000 year.

Why? Why? Why?

I know when I go to HyVee I'm not their to grocery shop I go for Marky Mark Burgers, Joe Fresh Fashion, and even to Christmas shop. Hell if I want to grocery shop i'll go to a grocery store not a HyVee they haven't been a grocery store since Randy bo Bandy took the reins.

What the hell does Marky Mark have to do with retail? Randy's bromance with Whalburg ruined a once successful company.

Sad!!!!! He absolutely has to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It makes no sense that Marky Mark has anything to do with HyVee.

Wasn’t Randy the one that took autonomy away from store directors or should I say store managers. Randy has been the CEO for 8 years. He is to blame for this problem HyVee is going through. Randy holds the store directors responsible for their store profit. If a store director fails to make the profit he will push them out the door. Randy needs to be held accountable for this miss manage of HyVee. He needs to be relieved of his duties as the CEO before HyVee ends up like Kmart.

As an outsider (non-employee) I can't say I didn't see this coming. A restaurant in every store that quickly went down hill. Making food out of cans and jars and selling it to the general public @ a high premium, recipe for disaster IMHO.

F&F trying to sell over priced clothes that sat on the shelves to collect dust and take up space, disaster #2.

Trying to sell lawn furniture and grills that sat out in the elements to essentially find their way into the garbage, disaster #3.

Trying to sell over priced hamburgers on behalf of Marky Mark and the F'ed up bunch, disaster #4.

Now, jacking up the prices on middle of the road meat, charging outlandish prices for milk and eggs after moving into the neighborhood, disaster #5.

Now this debacle, I'm sorry but I feel for the friends I have that work for Hy-Vee. Once a great business model that over expanded and now the employees are left holding the bag of c-ap that the leadership filled with their own #2's. It's sad when you have to find every reason not to shop a store that's 4 blocks from your house, but this is the final straw. No more loyalty to a complete corporate failure. Family owned my eye!

Some here posted that Randy has always had an open door policy and welcomes honest respectful disagreement, or something to that affect. I can quickly think of at least 10 incidents where he's either fired people, caused them to retire, or recommended they be let go when these people only disagreed with him. I've never experienced anyone in a work environment rule with such an iron fist.

Just a matter of time before they change all store director titles to store managers. We all will be getting a pay cut soon. I just hope I can still buy HyVee stock as a store manager.

Well maybe if they build a few more market grills they can recover from this mess. You should also add joe fresh clothing to all stores. Those two ideas just print money. Go big or go home.

Randy put this company into a downward spiral since the market grill roll out. Then over expansion in the twin cities. Then Whalburg. Nice job trying to find your legacy, You’ll never have it and I promise you will be known as the demise of a beautiful company. Now the hard working employees of this company have to suffer who made us what we were. The executive staff is living in denial and blaming the stores for every terrible decision they have made. Wait till social media gets ahold of the truth. You should be scared. If a new initiative is losing us money how can you possibly roll it out to every store in the company??? A 3 year old could run the company better. I know more and have more information than you will ever know. Good luck!

If you got something to say stop hiding behind your keyboards using pseudonyms. RE’s email has always been available to all of us employees along with all the execs.- doors are open to share your options in a proper, respectful manner. Been a very happy, valued employee for over 20 years and I would never choose to disrespect my Hy-Vee or co-workers in this manner. Bitter much?

Until you lose your job or take a pay cut, right?

Hy-vee has been going down hill since they started monkeying around with a successful formula. This is not the coasts. It is the midwest where family values, loyalty and appreciation of customers matter. You are taking big steps down the slippery slope toward bankruptcy. You need to backup instead of stumbling forward into the darkness.

Used Hy-Vee all my life
When they opened Market Grille, I thought what a mistake.
I liked the old way of getting your food and relaxing.
Everything at Hy-Vee is too high now, especially the bakery!
I hope they don’t go under, which I have mentioned to my wife many times.
Nice people “Too Expensive,“ you have to compete in the real world of pricing!
I like Hy-Vee, but I have to stretch my dollars as far as they can go also!

Does 'sharing your options in a proper, respectful manner' involve laying people off with no prior notice, blaming them for under performance they weren't responsible for, and implying this is a retail downturn when the problem was corporate decision making? Everyone knows retail is getting tougher, that doesn't cause overnight panic. Not like this. It is the loyal and higher earning employees they are targeting.

I live in Cedar Rapids, a longtime Hy-Vee stronghold. They seem to have lost their way, unable to decide if they want to position themselves as a high-end or discount store. The fuel-saver nonsense is a tired gimmick (it unfairly benefits those who buy 25 gallons of gas at a time vs. those of us who buy 10) and the normal store prices are just way too high. I only spend a fraction of the money there I that I did five years ago. Also agree with the Market Grille fiasco comments, everybody I know misses the old deli and sit down areas.

Any other company in the world the leadership would have been removed. It literally pays (pun intended) to work for a private company. It would never happen but an outsider would need to come in and rescue the culture at this point.

The Market grille fiasco sunk the ship. I dont want to be nasty, but we need new leadership, and have for years now. Happy to get an employee discount, but our bonus system ended up down the drain.
Too bad for the former store directors. Maybe if they stood up to him early on and banded together they would not be in the position they are in now.

Hy-Vee didn’t change fast enough with the times. Service is spotty and price are a lot higher than Walmart and Kroger stores. People now look at prices more than ever. That why Aldi are doing well
