Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Negative PTO when quitting

I'm finally leave this god-forsaken company. I'm going to put in my notice soon, but I currently have a negative PTO balance.

Does anyone know what happens when you leave the company with a negative balance? I can't find any policy on the hub

wow, pessimistic much? People end up with a negative PTO balance for a variety of reasons. In my case, we had a several deaths in the family within a span of 3 months. All required travel and I had negative PTO for a couple pay periods. You can't control life events.

I was laid off in November and I took 39 hours of negative PTO. I didn’t have to pay any of it back. I asked HR about it to confirm and they said there is no stipulation to pay it back once you leave. However, if you ever return to UHC you will start with negative PTO... which wasn’t a concern for me. I would never go back to a company that treated me so poorly.

So you take PTO you didn't earn. Nice play.

If you have a negative PTO balance, they will subtract that from your final paycheck so be prepared for it. If you want to help counter that amount you can change your 401k contribution to 0%, change your HSA/FSA deductions, adjust your W4 deductions or try to change your ESPP contributions to 0%.

They will subtract what you owe from your final check.
