Letter: Cummins makes tough decisions on layoffs

"As a former businessman, I understand the need to cut back employment when there is a downturn in your market. The company needs to reduce costs to offset declining sales revenues. I also understand that this is a tough decision for the corporation.

My concern is, when there is a necessary cutback (firing of numerous employees), why is it always at the expense of the most seasoned and productive employees? Granted these are the employees making the highest salaries, but at the same time, they are the people that have helped the company get to where they are. They are experienced, professional and good at what they do. By firing a person who is 55, making a good salary (say $100K) and keeping two younger people making $60K, it looks like you are cutting $100K when the company could have cut $120K from their expenses.

Cummins has long been a progressive leader in Columbus, and I am grateful for that. But firing people over 55 makes it nearly impossible for that person to find new work. Letting go of those under 40 allows those people to get new employment relatively easily.

The other consideration of dismissing Columbus employees (many of which were moved from other countries to Columbus to work for Cummins) is that the real estate market will be flooded with an abnormal amount of homes for sale with the loss of their jobs. The number of homes that will soon go on the market will probably reduce the total value of real estate, on the higher end, in Columbus.

Again, I understand the tough decision Cummins was forced to make. While I don’t like it, I understand it. I think that the tariffs put into place by President Donald Trump have really hurt our economy, especially in Columbus. If you don’t believe this, just ask a local farmer."

We know he is at least 55, I've said this many of times. Many of these older workers are working because THEY HAVE TO ALONG WITH THE YOUNGER WORKERS. I'm still surprised that no one hasn't tried to take them to court over their practices in hiring and firing.

The reality is that Cummins wants to move the entire production and most of the design / research overseas. Diesel Engines is a stale field, and you don't need top-of-the-line skilled workers to do some of the stuff at CTC/CEP/CMEP. Let's face it guys - we are not Apple/Google/Amazon making pathbreaking stuff. We are doing sh– that has been there for decades. And it's gotten so damn mature, that the only way the company's gonna make profits infinitely, is by cutting paychecks/having less people/ more automation/ cheap labor in India/China/Mexico. Anyone who thinks they can have a long term career in Cummins is just plain deluded.

Cummins is a pretty sh–ty employer to work for. They hire tons of foreign workers which is the only reason they get things done. American Citizens and Permanent Residents know better than to work for an employer that doesn't give a sh– about the employees AND makes you move to southern Indiana, one of the sh–tiest locations in the Midwest.

For the past 2-3 months there have been external postings for the same jobs they are cutting.. They have also been going to campus job fairs to find new college hires to start in 2020.. At the same time you can watch LinkedIn and other sites and see hundreds of current students announcing the great new jobs they just accepted at Cummins. The same jobs they just cut others from.. Makes sense doesn't it? Cummins doesn't even hide their lack of integrity and ethics.. They highlight that their only intention is to cut labor costs, while backfilling the same roles.. Truly makes you wonder why anyone would want to work there..

I have seen a current job posted externally for a same position they are cutting. I was told at one point a job must be posted internally for two weeks before it is posted externally. This practice seems to not be taking place anymore therefore showing that they would rather get rid of someone internally and hire the position for a lower salary from outside the company.

Cummins strategically cuts staff as to not appear discriminatory. When I was let go in 2015 after being ranked a 1/high pot a few months earlier!!, they gave me a list of those being let go in my function by age, gender, title since I was over 40. They had at least one male, one female, one white, one black, one Hispanic,etc., then one in their 20s, 30s, 40s, etc. So regardless of my performance, I checked the demographic check box, over 10 years seniority and higher salary...which by the way they promoted me 3 times in 10 years and I never applied for a role! They protect themselves from lawsuits, they have this lay-off c-ap down to a science. I wish someone could find a way for a class action lawsuit for unfair terminations. I totally agree though that they discriminate on seniority and salary.
