Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

So long Karl

Finally the company and the IT department in particular can begin to move forward without the darkness of Karl looming over. NM is still similar to Boeing in the sense that they still have their 737 Max (ahem LearnVest) that they are trying to make flight worthy. Boeing fixed their problem and now it is time NM to fix their problem in a similar manner.

Karl was a huge Dbag and I big reason I left. He is notorious in the area for being a jerk. Shortly after being hired he was told to make his Twitter account private because he couldn’t keep his big mouth shut. He should’ve been fired over a decade ago.

There absolutely was an announcement via email, direct from Neal Sample. It was an email about organizational change for the Technology business function which mentioned saying goodbye to Karl.

Almost all mention of KG has been removed online There was no statement or email. Org chart has his assistant sitting there with no boss. Usually they make something up. I wonder what happened

NM is tech obsessed but it seems to be making all the wrong decisions. I haven't seen slower growth anywhere. I don't understand how millions in dividends can be paid out with so much need for growth and development. Basically they stopped developments during the crash and are now starting everything again but back the way it was. They also outsourced tech support to a company in India but never trained the staff overseas on what we actually use the various applications for so they are as clueless as office staff in the US. There is no training on anything. Office staff is supposed to do it themselves, with 99% non-millennial staff. Meaning went born with a smartphone in hand, it is pretty difficult to figure out or self train during a 9-10 hour salary day. Very disappointing. Plus no one wants to go up the chain to tell C levels their ideas are horrible. They just continue to follow horrible ideas, groupthink.

Karl approached me in the cafeteria once, and I never felt more uncomfortable with another employee at NM. He was an enormous douchebag, thank goodness he's gone.

I hear Tim and Karl moved on and were the masterminds for the Iowa caucus app. Their brilliance continues to shine!

If you think LearnVest is the problem, you’re stuck in 2015. Not sure if you got the memo, but that company no longer exists, all the original people left, and leadership is back home where it belongs.

If you’re looking for the 737 MAX, look no further than the brainchild of NM’s army of tenured Ernst and Young consultants: Northstar. How many employees were fired so that we can continue to line the pockets of yet more snake oil salesmen?

And if you think getting rid of our former CTO (Karl) is gonna make things better, I hear the new CTO is clueless and all of Karl’s toxic buddies are still holding court with senior leadership positions.

Luckily I’m only a few years away from retirement...

Good riddance. In the end, Karl and Tim Schaefer reaped what they sowed. They will be remembered for their leadership in destroying many people's lives and a once strong organization
