Bad Business Decisions

The current CEO and corporate officers are now scrambling for very poor decisions in the last 10 years. Banking on the new markets(Minneapolis area) did not come close to expectations. Remodeling every store to try and be a urban type market put individual stores in holes they would take years to dig out of. Restaurants, unused chef stations, magazines no one looked at, forcing stores to take on product that they would just have to mark down to nothing after the holidays are few of their other great ideas that cost millions. Now these poor decisions have cost many long time, loyal employees their jobs. The stores are offering these individuals minimal hours, less pay, with shifts they cannot work, just to have them quit, and use the job offer as a reason to fight the unemployment claims. This will just be the first wave of layoffs, eventually they will like to be at maybe 10 full time employees under a store manager, with the rest of the staff as minimum wage employees, with no benefits. This place was a employee/ family friendly organization, but with the current corporate structure, things are only going to get worse.

For the sake of clarity, if you are demoted you may be eligible for unemployment in some states. It does vary, so check individual areas before making your decision. It's possible you may qualify for unemployment benefits in your state if you were demoted to part-time from full-time and stay on and you may also be eligible if you choose to resign rather than be demoted. I suggest consulting a lawyer in your region.

Years ago, I was offered a demotion and chose to resign because I found out I could receive unemployment benefits and it would likely be approved even if my company fought the claim. The benefits I received ended up being higher than my initial pay, but my company did not fight my claim either. I'm not certain what would happen if a company actually forced you to appeal, but you should ALWAYS appeal the initial denial and pursue it until all options are exhausted.

There are no part time people available. Unemployment is Uber low. Will Hy-Vee transition from Walmart level of service to Aldi level of service while keeping their prices ridiculously high?
