Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

About to be hired by Staples...

I’m going to be presented with an offer to join Staples soon, and was wondering how the performance related bonus system works - are bonuses paid out regularly at Staples? And if so, are they paid out at 100%? The HR manager said that last year the bonus paid out at well over 100%, but couldn’t tell me if that was typical.

Would appreciate any guidance available.

Do yourself a favor and turn down the job and find somewhere else to work. You don’t want to join a sinking ship.

Did you take the job? Are you furloughed now?

It depends on if it is a store position or warehouse. The warehouse positions are in demand because people usually quit after a year or two. They have tons of OT. My lead just put in a 60 hour workweek. The stores on the other hand keep making cutbacks on hours.

I got s—ed in under market rate with the promise of bonus which YOY exceeded goal and have heard I will get 50% at most which will be prorated based on the number of days employed in their fiscal year. Had I known then what i know now, I would have said no thanks. Actively seeking new employment.

Depends what department. Do not accept position in Corp supply chain, just don’t. You will regret it!!!!

If you are already employed somewhere else and this opportunity isn’t over a 20% increase in your current situation I wouldn’t be thinking about it. C-level and Sycamore are completely disconnected from the actual business and just looking to position for a sell which is the big question mark at this point. There is no appreciation for their associates outside of the false appreciation week they manufactured. It’s a joke

I would say that giving me a bookmark to hang on my cubicle, a sticker to wear, and receiving an email from a supervisor encouraging associates to hang up the bookmark is pushing an agenda that I do not agree with. I have no problem with cultural events. I just don't understand why Staples needs to dedicate so much time to the LGBTQ community. Staples should be inclusive of any associate who is capable of doing their job to the highest level.

Read the news. Google Sycamore. Layoffs galore. You're only being hired because anyone with half a brain has already left. Run.

"Is it because they have monthly cultural events"

No, but in part we should ask 'where is the event for the straight female' and 'where is the event for the white male' and 'where is the event for 'someone that isnt a minority'.

Cultural diversity doesn't lift one and ignore the rest. That is called discrimination!

I'm all for diversity, equality and culture. But, there needs to be diverse, equal and culture for all in order for there to be actual diversity, equality and culture.

What qualifies as a liberal agenda that's being forced on you at Staples?

Is it because they have monthly cultural events and have a workplace that is open and inclusive of women, LGBTQ+ and ethnic minority employees? BTW, I'm none of these.

No one's forcing me to attend these events or groups. I'm sure you could create an employee group to find other conservative employees.

The culture here, as far as people goes, is great. Right now is a bit of a turbulent time with too many initiatives and too little resources. Makes for some stress, but the people offset that quite a bit.

The "culture" is not really really good.

Listen, the GLOBAL economy is spiraling out of control, add that to the facts that Staples is not well capitalized (no money) and has nothing to leverage (not even the home office) for a loan, the likelihood of the company going bankrupt is high. This is unless SP infuses a few hundred million which they'd need to get from banks which will be super picky about whom they're lending money too.

How does this happen? When the market tanks (DONE) and we enter a recession (DONE) every company and person cuts-back (IN PROGRESS). And Staples / supplies are among the first things to get cut back.

If you want to be in that position, come on over to the Titanic. Otherwise, you're far better elsewhere.

I would say culture is pretty good if you are not a traditional conservative which is 95% of people here. Food truck day in May with some great food trucks. Team events a couple of times a year. I find the vacation time and flexibility a huge perk as well. That is why I will not leave until they kick me out. I just wish they didn't push a liberal agenda.

Bonus is never guaranteed if you need it to be I would look elsewhere

Culture is meh,

It’s a good as any place to shop for a better place if you already have another offer I would go with that

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The base salary is about 10% lower than market rates - but when added to the bonus potential, the overall package is slightly better than market (salary and bonus). But if the bonus doesn’t pay out consistently at 100% or more, My other options seem better, unless the culture at Staples is amazing?

The HR manager told me that employees are empowered and the culture is really, really good and there are employee appreciation days, etc.

Does anyone think that is accurate?

Staples had a very good year in 2018 so bonuses were very high (above 100%). This past year, retail is going to be around 100% and NAD struggled so there will be a bonus, but below 100%...maybe closer to 50%. It is not the most predictable, but retail has gotten at least 100% for three straight years. With what is happening with coronavirus this year, I would expect that we would not hit our numbers and there will be no bonus.

Don’t accept the offer. Much better places to work. Goals and priorities are always changing, and things are very unorganized.
