I am about to join WD at end of May when my school is done.
I am going to work on HDD R&D San Jose office.
With the Coronavirus and the new CEO, should I fear that I would lose the job before even starting it?? How are things over there??
What happened to Cordano? He is no longer on leadership page. I did notice He cashed a lot of stock out.
Laid off without any warning. Maybe i belong to the so called "older high salaried crowed", however highly doubt about it, compared to published data on the internet.
My observation on NCGs:
Yes you should worry. My husband started there 7 months ago and was just laid off with no warning. His role was eliminated along with others . No warning and he left a great position he'd been in for 7 years elsewhere thinking it would be a good move to go to WDC. . WRONG!! After surviving the SanDisk absorbtion into WD, I enjoyed the job till it was no more. Laid off. Decent severence. The RSU's that I cashed as quick as they vested, went right into the bank and collecting some interest in a high rate CD. So thanks for that WD, I appreciated that. As a NCG, getting a job at a high tech firm is better than driving for uber, as for the resume goes. But, like with any job the best time to look is when you are employed. With the COVID-19 shutting down alot of places, I ended up working for a major defense contractor and I am able to work from home at this time. So, get it on your resume, and start looking for a company that actually will appreciate the work and effort you put into the job. WD rarely recongizes anyone for that. Sandisk did. Sometimes I wish that WD never bought SD, but then again, that door closed and another flew right open.
I don't want to pss in your Cheerios, but I don't want to see you pssed on by WD either. I jumped off the WD ship last year. Just couldn't take it any more. It will tear you up and spit you out. The average sentiment in my entire business unit was "please lay me off, give me my severance, and get me out of here". Unfortunately they never did, so one by one we started dropping like flies and leaving on our own. I was the 9th that I knew of in a 3 or 4 week period and I heard more fell out after me.
WD as an organization thrives of bitterness and egos. Egos of guys who think they are god and will hear no different, and bitterness of the guys who will never advance because you only advance at WD if you are one of the cronies.
HDD is very SLIGHTLY better SSD, but by fractional amounts. You will go into WD as a dead end job and you leave damaged and angry. That is if they don't pull the rug on you at the last minute and tell you the day before your start date that the req was frozen... they did that to 4 NCG's for us.
why start in HDD? you will walk away with nothing and it only make finding the next job harder. you have time, find something better. which is pretty much anything other than HDD.
really, don't throw away your career w/ a bad first step.
If you want job security, don't join a storage company whose primary focus is on HDDs.
No. New Grads are safe but HDD is a shrinking market.
