OSP BEING ASKED TO GO FTTH NJN. ANYWHERE ELSE?

Was asked today by osp sup if we were interested in going ftth. Wondering if they are asking everywhere. What are actual outside plant techs think? Would you go. We are being told we will be left under osp in marquee will just report to ftth. Thoughts?

Rf is going nowhere. Why are we going docsis 3.1? How do you think cellphones work? Why are we putting more power supplies up for small cell networks? Cause of our mvno deal with tmobile. Cell towers only reach so far, strand mounted cell sites extend those networks especially since 5g wavelengths are shorter.

FTTP is not a department still under OSP why get promoted to Project. Fiber is the future we are seeing the end of RF. Adapt or be left behind in this field.

If we all keep volunteering to help other departments there’s no need to promote someone into that group . It’s all great til the expectations are too high and you run back to your department. We only have our selves to blame for what they’re doing .

What if it means slinging boxes during the initial rollout? A hybrid tech that sort of does it all? They need to give a job description of your responsibilities. It’s one thing if you are helping a service tech with a plant problem or to run a drop but it’s another if you are installing the equipment in a house. That would be a deal breaker for me. It also might depend on how long you expect to stay with the company. All things to think about before making that shift. But there are definite strengths in knowledge of all products but shouldn’t there be some sort of job title for someone that does it alL along with more $?

In njn osp guys working on the ftth project report to a fs supervisor, which is weird. Still do standby and help osp as needed.
