Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Let’s talk pay, now that we are no longer with UHG/Optum/UHC

Many of us whom have been laid off have long suspected we were under paid, and now that we are no longer employed let’s talk pay. Particularly how much you made, years in service and pay grade. If any of you are afraid of being found out which would be weird, please just round up or round down the number of years of service and pay to the closest whole number. This may help others whom are still employed and help us as we seek out employment from other companies and some of us may return to UHG.

I will start with myself. I was in IT, Grade level 26 with more than ten years of employment and my pay was 63k.

A thicket of unreality. Just look at these salaries. Corporate America. Propaganda fest

Fantastic post, it shows so much disparity in pay. Those of us told we make too much is a lie, of course. They make the salary ranges, they hire us, it’s all lies.

Those that remain will also see this information.

Grade 29 paid $90,474 per year....SO much lower than I’ve seen..........Now I see why I was told if I moved down to a SG 28 I should still get a “raise”. Never did, but survived.....for now....

Keep in mind Minnesota is one the highest taxed states in the US. It's not the coasts but Minneapolis has a pretty high COL as well.

Hospitals in metro areas offer big pay but it’s not work from home obviously so while that should be attractive it’s not. Also, gen x here and I’m not moving. Too much hastle. Too much money and effort. And even with higher pay offers if you are unemployed they skip over your resume often so if they do have a computer glitch and notice you they offer lower pay than to other folks. So if you suspect layoffs coming get out while you have a job if possible.

PTO was the big loss for me. 18 yrs. 28 days PTO with an addl week purchased each year to make it 33. Continuing education units 2 days. No severance. New company making me return back to two or three weeks and no continuing Ed days given. So I have better money elsewhere but the dismantling of less time with friends and family makes it s— as to e is all we have. So UHG enjoyed screwing us there

Location matters big. Like any other company if your long term tenured it's very likely your under paid a bit. Your always make more jumping around and moving locations. You have to actually get the jobs and be willing to move. Most would rather be comfortable and have a stable family life for less money. A job loss changes that but coming off a layoff you have little bargaining power. If your finding a higher paying job awesome but many are gonna have to take a pay cut and take a job that is offered after a certain amount of time being unemployed. That is just reality

Location matters a lot as well - NY, CA, CT all pay substantially more due to cost of living.

I was a sr. manager, so can speak to some salary differentiation - for example, a grade 28 with good experience in the US south can expect $70-80k, the same job in CT is $90k+.

I saw an HR report showing the breakdown of average salaries by team in IT, some of them are pretty unbelievable. Sr. Directors are pushing $200k, especially with RRP, and based on that I'm sure the tower VPs are making $250k or more. I was a grade 30 with several decades of experience and was making $155k. Since my layoff I've found that, compared to similar companies, I was below the market - nobody even blinks when I tell them my salary. Most recruiters are telling me I should be asking for a minimum of $170k, with some jobs topping at $225k. Of course, none of them have hired me yet . . . :-(

They bring in the TDP interns at as much as $130k depending on the job, particularly development work.

Bottom line is, if you've been with the company for a long time, odds are you're undervalued, even if you've managed to get 'high performer' merit and RRP over the years.
