It's time for a reality check at HP. As a Xerox employee, I can attest to the carnage that is decimating our company. Yes, people in their fifties and some in their sixties have either left on their own or been laid off. It's a brutal reality, one that HP employees will be facing if Icahn gets his way. Do not sell yourself short if you're an older worker. The job market is strong and experienced ex-Xerox employees are landing on their feet. The key to success is to take advantage of the time you have to search while employed. Act decisively, don't be part of the herd that will be sent to slaughter when the barbarians break in to plunder and pillage, leaving thousands without any benefits in the unemployment line.
There is a ton of value to the older folks and companies know it. They don't freak out at little things, don't expect everyone to bend for them and have tons of experience dealing with curve balls. Not everyone is perfect but assuming you are worthless because of your age is foolish. Companies do want experienced/calm/talented older employees.
You're telling people who have been at HP for 20+, sometimes 30+ years to "update their resume." That ship sailed long ago. The people I work with have absolutely no idea about the modern tech industry.

I doubt very much that any of them get to be on the board.
Start updating your resume. If HP has this albatross hung around it's neck there will be a precipitous descent into obsolescence, despair, apathy and finally, annihilation. The vultures are circling, every bone shall be picked clean, your bones.
