I got an offer for staff engineer. I was not aware of staff eng at Intel. I thought there was only principal engr. Do you know what this might be? I have not yet made up my mind but to join but wanted to know if there are any explanations

staff engineer is the engineering/management position with the job grade 8 or 9 in the engineering organization. In the organization, the grade 8 is the point where each can select if it moves to the management ladder or continues the engineer ladder. The staff engineer position will serve the pure engineer position, as well as the engineering manager or the senior engineering manager position. If one decides to be the manager, the goal is to be a director at the job grade 10. On the other hand, in the engineer ladder, to be a principle engineer at the same grade. Remember, that if you choose the engineer ladder, and promoted to the grade 8, it is the last moratorium. if you are promoted to the grade 9, you shall climb up to the 10 in a few years - otherwise the company will bring the redeployment.
principal engineer is a purely political position
Congrats! If I stay at Intel, I’d definitely want to work towards being a principal engineer. I think staff engineer is a step toward principal engineer.
You didn't bother to ask what the job entails?
Staff engineers are grade 8-9 and principals are grade 10
Those are grade levels. A Staff Engineer is a lower grade (8 & 9) than a Principal Engineer (10 & 11).
Staff Engineer is 1 level above recent BS/MS College Grad and 2 levels below a Principal. In any case, Intel is a toxic company with no long-term career opportunities. You will eventually be laid off unless you are an under-represented minority.
Staff engineers are below Principal Engineers in the pay grade scale. Principal Engineers start at Grade 10. You can theoretically be a staff engineer at Grade 8 or 9. Just depends on what the job gets you in at. Of course push for the highest grade you can as once you’re in is much more difficult to rise in the ranks (unless of course you have a VP or above that you can latch onto to support and push you forward quickly). Hope this helps and good luck!
