One reason MWD failed in aberdeen was management weren’t capable of implementing remote operations. Spent a long time discussing it but no one came up with solutions.

The remote operations centre will be in Romania....low salaried and low experienced hands will be order of the day, with a cross trained directional driller on site. All to save a few dollars for the client.
Beam me up Scotty.

The operators are pushing remote ops not the service companies. On US Land remote with autotrak curve is standard in the north east. There is usually a river field hand that picks up tools but the majority is handled by remote controlling computers at the rig. DD’s are also in the office on most of these jobs.
Communications downtime is part of the plan. Offshore has begun to experiment with reduced head count jobs, not just in Norway with fiber optic connections but also in deepwater GOM where gimbal satellite communications are marginal in bad weather.

Not possible. The connectivity at the rigs is not reliable enough and there are not enough trained people to run such a remote service. It also reduces the service quality delivered to the clients due to one remote guy that is supposed to monitor multiple jobs. I know of several instance of incidents that caused lost time due to this set up on my jobs already. The clients won't go for this. [Sure there are lots of incompetent hands already on the rigs, but those might be some of the same guys moved into the remote monitoring centres.]
