Thread regarding Cummins Inc. layoffs

It is all over the news now...

I can tell from past experience that rating and ranking from the previous year is typically used unless they have the latest data from this year ready before the layoffs. They will generally cut people rated 3s or low 2s.

If your manager thinks you are leaving their team you are at risk. If you recently left your old team and have not been rated and ranked by your new team you are also at risk. Don’t change positions right now within the company.

Don’t let anyone know you are even thinking about it. Wait until the layoffs are done to look at moving within the company. If you were rated a 3 last year get your resume ready and get a head start on finding a new job. If you were a 2- don’t be surprised if they walk you out.

It doesn’t matter what you do. HR runs reports on salary etc. and if you are high in your salary band (even if due to high performance and raises) - you are toast and you can’t hide. HR thinks that you can be replaced by dryer lint since they have no idea who anyone is or what anyone does. This places rewards mediocrity and nothing more.

I was ranked a 1 for 2014. Approached for a promotion to a director level job in April 2015. I did not reside in Columbus, IN, nor could I move due to personal responsibilities, which upper management knew. Job was given to a local. (By the way, that guy left Cummins the next year!). I was let go in the Fall of 2015. In my 10 years at Cummins, I was not rated below a 2 ever. Multiple 1s, a few promotions, multiple awards (even ones given directly by Solso and Linebarger). Respected by colleagues and direct reports. A lot of my work is still being used at Cummins. The way HR approaches reductions in force is severely skewed, in the name of "diversity", they make sure they have at least one of each demographic, in each salary range, etc. as to not appear discriminatory, regardless of performance. No one is safe there, except those on Tom's staff, of course.

I was ranked a 1 last year and I'm polishing my resume and changing availability on LinkedIn. I saw some solid performers get let go in 2015. Like the first commenter said, it can be as simple as you POed the wrong director at some point in your past. Lots of corruption.

It won't matter what your performance is, sure it's good to have high performance but it doesn't mean you are safe. They will remove whoever they feel they can with the least amount of impact.

I hope it was that black and white and only performance driven, let me add a few here. If you are not in good graces of your manager or director, start polishing up. If you have ever crossed any stakeholder that can contribute to your rating and ranking, start polishing. If you don't have any family member retired from cummins and you are not from southern Indiana, start polishing up. If you have not been a yes man and have actually spoken up and held your superiors or peer managers accountable, start polishing up! If you have ever taken a stand and made a decision instead of just building consensus and making everybody happy, at the cost of not getting anything done, start polishing up.
