Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Companies don't owe you loyalty

I do not understand why people think, or expect, companies to be loyal to them as employees. This is a capitalistic society. Money rules and employees are just that. They are people employed to make the company money. The company is the ruler – the ones at the top are just as replaceable as the plebs at the bottom. Loyalty is gone, as technology and telecommuting has opened up an entire global talent pool. Education is not dying, BUT this behind-the-times thought process is. Cengage is late to the game, in a lot of ways. They haven't diversified their offerings enough to stay relevant across markets.

Very true. Companies certainly owe no loyalty to their employees or vice versa. However, some companies choose to temper their quest for profits with degrees or humanity, morality, and just doing the right thing by people. Cengage is simply not among that class of companies.

Similarly, choosing to be employed with a company is not a privilege.

Why has no one unionized this far? Seems like there is plenty of opportunity.

Sounds like unions may need to make a strong comeback. And professionals need to stop looking down on them.
