Thread regarding Cummins Inc. layoffs

My buddy on H1B visa got laid off, he has to leave the country in 60 days - s---s!

I am personally not worried about getting laid off, I hate Cummins layoff culture and the horrible management and total lack of leadership. I am waiting to be laid off!!! I feel bad for one my buddies though, he has been with the company 5 years and is a hard worker and super smart in what he does. The company totally used him and then laid him off, worst part is that he has to leave the country in 60 days.

Everyone complains about Immigrants taking jobs and all, but the truth is the company is succeeding due to some of these super smart immigrant engineers.

I suggest everyone quit this horrible company while they can. The only people that will never leave the company are the people that know they will never find a job outside and are not marketable. Just tells you the bottom of the barrel c-ap leadership left from previous layoff rounds that is making the decisions currently.

"Not true.
The H1Bs that are held hostage by companies due to the sponsorship issues also won't voluntarily leave. I've worked with people who came here from India on H1Bs, got married, had kids, bought houses and then were laid off. Not sure why anyone would take all that risk not being on a green card, but they do."

It's because of our flawed interpretation of birthright citizenship and they are cranking out US Citizens as anchor babies.

Yeah, they come here for 3 years and during that time crank out 3 anchor babies/US citizens that will come back and take our jobs in 24 years.....the whole H1B systems needs to be eliminated.

Stop hating on H1B's most of the Indian H1B's in Cummins would have been US citizens by now, if not for the crazy 150 year GC backlogs

H1-B visas hurt the American people, and keep salaries low since they increase the supply of workers for the same number of jobs. And since H1-B have a sense of entitlement plus went to bad Universities in their countries , they are poor workers. Terrible lack of common sense too.

If you are let go, do you have to pay back Perm case expenses and any educational assistance Cummins has paid/reimbursed for you in last 2 years?

How Cummins performs and what management does has nothing to do with H1B employees. I am a caucasian male US worker who has managed 6 H1B college hires at Cummins over the past 6 years and can testify that every one of them are grateful for their jobs, have great attitudes and work hard. Compare that to the vast majority of ungrateful Generation Me, silver-spoon-fed millennials born in the USA who think they are entitled to everything their elders have worked hard for which frankly disgusts me. For those H1B employees who think they are underpaid and being exploited, I know for a fact that Cummins has to provide evidence to the US government that non-US workers are being paid fairly and not being exploited but do not have to do the same for US workers. Exempt employees are at-will employees which means they can resign at any time and Cummins can terminate their employment at any time. If you want some type of job security then go join a union. I hear OCU and DBU employees have better compensation and job satisfaction than exempt employees... just ask them. I am in no way endorsing Cummins' pratice of hiring and firing with reckless abandon but unfortunately, as a publicly held company in a cyclical market, it's what Cummins does in order to meet expectations of financial analysts and keep shareholders happy. Therefore, for those of you that buy and sell Cummins stock for financial gain, consider yourselves partly to blame.

it is true that H1B visa workers are indentured servants (google that), however Cummins makes it way worse for us. I was an H1B worker at Cummins and saw my peers who went through the same situation.

Most large companies sponsor H1B visas, but simultaneously also initiate a green card petition process so that these workers can stay in the US in the future, regardless of which employer they work for. Cummins, perhaps knowing that their competitive advantage in S. Indiana refuses to initiate a green card petition process until H1B visas expire (which is 6+ years into the job). Even worse, they require immigrants to sign a contract to stay with CMI for 3+ years in exchange for sponsoring the green card petition.

This means at least a decade of working with CMI before being able to permanently reside in the US outside of working for Cummins. Meanwhile, they constantly have the ability to terminate you at any time - oh and also pay you however low they'd like.

To all the people complaining about how H1Bs should know the rules and if they don't like them why did they come to the US - I think it is then facetious to complain about the layoffs as your employment is also voluntary and the rules say you can get fired on the whim of management. This is an issue that affects individuals who have kids, parents, neighbors, and communities. If you can't empathize that's okay but there is no need to pile on.

That should have been every large American company. Especially those with IT and Engineering departments.

The whole H1B program is a mess and is being exploited by pretty much every American company for it's cheap source of labor.

The truth is that CMI would be more successful without H1B immigrants. Moral within corporation was high before 1990’s. Went down the hill from there. Liberals can't run the business.

How much was his salary? Why is he in USA in the first place? He knew the rules when he took the job in USA. He could have stayed in his country and found a job there but he chose to come to USA. The rules say, now he has to go back within 60 days or find another sponsor if he wants to stay in USA. I'm sure he will find another sponsor within 60 days. Most people on H1B normally do. I wouldn't worry to much for the H1B guy. If he goes back to his country he will still find a job since most jobs are being outsource to his country (assuming he's from India).
