Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

If you’re leaving OXY where would you go?

For this looking to leave OXY, what company’s / industries do you think would offer better opportunities. I’m not an OXY fan boy but as I’m preparing to take my VSP in August, I’m not seeing a lot of comparable salaries and benefits. I’d like to hear where other people are like looking.

I left Oxy (great company, great opportunity, great experience) and went somewhere else a bit closer to the house. It was an absolute Godsend, and not because Oxy was some terrible hell, but because Houston Traffic is.

Every job and company has its latrines, so moan about the ones where you are but know there will be something else you will moan about at the next place too.

Save your money while you make it and invest till you have FU money, but remember there are latrines at home too.

Interestingly Amazon has 30000 openings in the US. About 1% of those jobs require Oil and Gas background but with Computer Science experience. Their pay is on par with Oil and Gas majors but with bonus and stock options it is much higher than this dying patch.

BP? Get a brain test. Pre-fill the EEOC case form and get a labor lawyer advise before applying to BP. It will safe you from dealing with BP's lunatic and unethical ethos. Also, prepare yourself to deal with BP labor lawyers defending their "unethical" managers and wanna be "leaders". The Astros move to fire managers for unethical activity is not in BP's DNA. When you get layoff by BP weeks before retirement age - medical benefits and severance package puff!

No O&G is safe. The plan is to reduce headcount by 20% by 2025. All anyone can do is work their job, hope for the best, and prepare for the worst. I’m working at a major and it’s one reorg after another, they keep cutting mostly the wrong people.

Thank you to the one good piece of advice. Damn, some of you all are bitter.

I agree that the benefits are the big difference. I could potentially match base somewhere else but nowhere near the same benefits.

No no ... there are legitimate VSP effective dates as late as Aug 8, 2020 - I know of payroll and CAO specifically.

You’re preparing for VSP in August 2020? Sounds like a load of BS to me. August 2019 VSP is over.

No info on your skill set , so no one can give you any real info.

I had 38 years in upstream O&G and recently look a VS package. Not many industries can compete with upstream energy for salary and bennies. If you’re good at anything, do that thing; you’ll enjoy it and make more money to boot.

I’m currently looking for a role finger banging your mom’s twaught. Could you put in a good word for me? Seriously though, people like you are unbearable. It’s called life. If by 18 you haven’t learned how to put your big boy/girl pants on and figure $hit out for yourself, you should stick your finger in a light socket.

The oil business is getting smaller and a VSP is nice if you are retiring or have a job. I know some G&G folks that have yet to get a comparable job from the industry contraction back in 2016. I am going to hang with Oxy to the end. Hopefully the next VSP will send me to retirement. The salary is just part of this job. All the benefits like pto, 401k match, retirement, medical and dental insurance, life and spouse life, std, ltd all add up in addition to salary. Oxy is not a bad place to work no matter what others say. Those benefits are very expensive when you pay for them out on the market.
