I work for a Semi-Supercenter. Meaning we are not as big as a Supercenter, but bigger than a Neighborhood Market. We have seen the company do a HUGE push for first and second shift. Our second shift has been continuously understaffed by 5-7 people. This is what management was telling us. I am on third shift, we have maybe 10-12 people total; including management. We can never finish our freight, mainly because we have to do about 90% of second shifts freight. Now, out of the blue, second shift is magically over staffed and they are cutting their hours. Of course, they are getting less done than they were before. First shift is also getting their hours sliced. Third shift is the only currently safe position as far as hours are concerned. I'm certain they'll axe overnights asap. However, it also seems like they might be trying to turn our store into one of those shadow or dark stores I was reading about. I say this because we have noticed less and less shopping carts in our store and parking lot. They had also purchased a new forklift, which interestingly enough, was stolen from the outback lockup it had been placed in. The way they are treating employees seems like they are pushing more for pickers than customer service reps/ stock clerks. Pushing harder to know where the product is and being able to do certain jobs faster (like go-backs). Another thing that was interesting was getting rid of our trainer/HR rep or whatever Wal-Mart called that position. They were supposedly going to have the managers take over and do that job as well. So, to make sure they were trained properly they brought in a corporate rep. 2 days a week. Then after about 2 weeks of "training" decided that the corporate rep. was now a permanent staple to our store at her 2 day a week position. It is a VERY unnerving feeling not exactly knowing which direction they are going. We are definitely sinking, so I guess down is the only REAL direction. I don't have far to fall though, I'm already homeless even though I am a 40 hour a week employee. There's others where I work in a similar situation. It definitely isn't getting any better.
