I worked at Paychex a few months short of 20 years, before retiring in last year. The company had a history of closing its smaller branches and consolidating into the larger branches, to cut costs while I was there. After the founder retired from the CEO position, the changes made by the company became more and more rapid. Changing the structure of the company, not filling positions where people retired or quit, increasing client count per specialist, decreasing personalized service, pushing as many clients as possible to the online self-service model, and finally creating large service centers allowing them to close more branches to service clients en masse. I found that the way people kept their jobs was to be willing to see where the trends were headed, to apply for new positions that opened up (when you were in a department that was slowly shrinking to becoming less of a focus in the company). If you didn't, then you faced the possibility of being on the chopping block. Paychex is always about change and finding new ways to do more things, while squeezing more work for less money out of it's employees. This is the Paychex way...

If you are a Paychex employee, my only advice is to do what I did. Squeeze each dollar you receive while working there, save, save, and save some more. Invest your money (not in Paychex stock because your income shouldn't come from only one company, diversify). Cut your costs, pay off your house as fast as you can, get out of debt...plan on being laid off and live like you have already been let go, to squeeze more money out of each payday.... and you too might be able to retire before you are on the chopping block. It isn't worth the stress. Use your job like the company uses you, as a means to an end. Set your goals and make your plans, stick to them, and get out as fast as you can so you can be FREE from worry.

Layoffs did happen. They picked by zipcode and position. They didnt care if you were a star performer or not. They claim they let people WFH but supervisors were not allowed so they were let go. Every employee of paychex not in an RSC or DSC should beware

Yes, lay-offs took place recently. Heard many Admin level as well as some higher level were part of the reduction.

Layoffs in IT in Rochester started Wednesday 6/24. Pretty good severance pkg, non-disparagement clause, outplacement assistance for resumes and LinkedIn.

Yes. Layoffs happened this week in NJ. A friend of mine was laid off yesterday. She's devastated. Last day is July 10. Doesn't know what severance package will be. It's all about the bottom line. Altice (Optimum) had people take salary cuts for a few months but kept them employed. If employees are the heart of your business, you want to take care of them.

Paychex has always and will always think of people in this order

Stock Holders
Sales Staff
Clients
Corporate EEs
All other EEs

Been that way since 1971.

In a month, they’re stopping all 401k matching contributions for the next fiscal year, cutting executive salaries and in a few days they’re letting go of some back office people. In addition, there will be no employee merit increases. All this, with announcements of big restructuring changes and physical office closures.

Meanwhile, they keep stating how strong their financial position is...

Back office people really get the short end, it seems. They are not usually bonus eligible either unless they’re in Payroll. What Paychex fails to see, as do most PEO’s, is the back office people are the ones who are making things happen for their client-facing partners. They provide the support for the urgent requests. They provide the data to make the decisions. They do the audits and find the cracks in the system to make sure that all employees and clients have a great experience. It’s disappointing they are not valued and are the first to go in this type of situation, seemingly because the clients won’t notice.

Yes. Layoffs were announced today. Severance and job placement assistance will be provided. There will be changes to some benefits apparently as well. I’ve heard from other reps in the country that they plan to announce that they will no longer be contributing to 401(k) plans and will close offices in some areas. We should find out officially soon.

They've doubled down on the sales team and raised the payouts, so for now I think things are ok

If 10% of jobs are lost then that implies ADP and Paychex are 10% smaller and shrinking...when will layoffs come? Anyone know? I’m at Paychex right now and the rumor mill is swirling. What departments will get hit first?
