The bottom line is that the DeVry "classes" are a rigged system that takes people with almost zero academic skills and limited mental abilities, puts them through a diluted learning experience that is designed to give them fake letter grades for any type of participation, causes them to take on unsustainable and undischargeable levels of debt, and then awards them a meaningless certificate. The system is rigged to pass through everyone who enters and to take advantage of people's (a) ignorance about what a real school does for its students and (b) people's fear of failure in the workplace. The system functions perfectly to enrich the DV managers while hoodwinking and cheating the participants. DeVry is predatory capitalism in its most venal form.

ceq: You made a lot of good points in your reply to the poorly informed “hater” along with drafting a comprehensive list of issues that have plagued those on the inside. The only single item I would challenge is the one bullet stating “Often outdated, typically weak curriculum.” I’m familiar with courses and curricula across many colleges, and looking through course syllabi, selected textbooks, documented curricula and published degree requirements I haven’t seen any significant differences between DVU and many other institutions. From what I’ve seen, higher ed course content seems pretty standard these days and heavily influenced by publishers through their texts and supporting materials. The real challenge, IMHO, is that in delivering these courses our professors are placed in an impossible position with regard to being able to honestly and objectively evaluate students’ performance for reasons you made clear.

Yes, HLC Regional Accreditation is current for DVU and scheduled for re-affirmation next year:

What are you digging for, Capt. Kid? DeVry doesn’t have an accreditation issue the same way that DCEH did. You already know what’s wrong with the place:

  • Poor reputation with employers
  • Past overstatements of graduate employability—already settled with FTC
  • Often outdated, typically weak curriculum
  • Typically underprepared students
  • Accelerated sessions making that worse
  • Abuse of faculty, including incentives to pass students for fear of retribution on course surveys
  • A factory model of education and economies of scale as deterministic
  • Thrown away by its previous parent company to inexperienced new management
  • A culture of fear created by management abuse and ever-impending layoffs
  • The sometimes mercenary attitude of former admissions staff
  • Challenges with loan distributions
  • And now, excessive class sizes and students being shuffled online despite the dangling promise of onsite classes

No one needs to blow your whistle—all you have to do is read this board...it’s all as clear as daylight. Why do you hate DeVry is particular? Why not Phoenix or Ashford, or ITT? Did you have a bad experience with them, or someone you know?

Moreover, can’t we talk about something RIGHT with DeVry for a change? There have been students who go on to do very well, caring faculty and in-demand programs in the history of the place. It wasn’t always bad and I bet there are still positive stories out there.
