Thread regarding Kroger Co. layoffs

The layoffs have begun in southern AZ

1st hand knowledge of multiple separations today, most with severance packages that are somewhat reasonable. In my area, they are the same ones used in 2017. Looks like for salaried associate they offer 1 month if pay for every year up to 5 years of service. 6-10 years gets 6 months salary, 11-20 years gets 7.5 months salary and 20 years or more gets 9 months. No info on other benefits yet.

These observations are from a person who recently left the company after working for Kroger many, many years. Our district had a couple of store directors nearing retirement age who said the only reason they continued to work was to collect the severance package. They quit managing a couple of years ago so they could be rewarded. No leadership, just biding their time even though they had nothing to offer. I listed some names of other under achieving managers last week and lo and behold I've heard two of them were asked to leave. Kroger isn't just firing people for the sake of cutting payroll. It's 2019 and the days of being a store manager and sitting in the office while your assistants direct the store functions are over. We, at store level, never believed the need for all the co manager positions created three years ago. It's just a shame those who took the promotions are now out of work. If they had stayed an hourly employee they would be going to work tomorrow. High reward/high risk. I'd apply for work at Amazon.

Stock had been up and down for a few years... that makes executives nervous... Kroger having to spend a fortune to roll out and expand grocery pick up and delivery. Digital coupons ... not to mention everyday operations, exceeding previous year sales and making payroll and gross margin projections... since 2005 Kroger has blown up support staff payroll... too much division office staff, too much district staff and too many assistant store managers with very little responsibility. Executives making millions, seriously look it up, the information is on the internet... Restock Kroger program is a failure no matter what spin they put on it!!!

The kroger company is in a financial crisis in my division so I understand their opinions to cut high paid and soon to retire associate's with good severance packages. I dont understand the decision of cutting the guy or girl who has showed a great deal of improvement that has only been with the company for a couple of years that shows great leadership and has a bright future with kroger. I think they are making decisions based on favoritism and not based on work ethic. They should get a third party to evaluate the skills of the middle management before making their decisions.
