Thread regarding Kroger Co. layoffs

How hard is it to find a job for people over fifty?

I've been hearing horror stories about what the job market is like for anybody over fifty, but I'm hoping those stories are exaggerated. Or more precisely, I have to hope since I think that by the end of this week, I might be in a position of searching for a new job.

So is it really that bad out there?

Jobs for 50 year old people are scarce but available. If you are positive and mature, you should have little trouble.

As far as 60+ year olds... if you still need a high paying job at this age, you have seriously mismanaged your life.

I lost my good job and struggled with finding another until I signed on with a grocery chain as an hourly employee. Over 10 years I worked myself up to receiver which I considered the best position in the store. I tried to break into management (I have an MBA) but was ignored presumably because of my age and the fact I hadn't been in grocery my entire career. No matter, I made it work until I retired. My job had plenty of perks. Well, they weren't official as I created most of them. But yeah, unless you possess a monumental skill set you better swallow your pride and find something you can survive on. I got a divorce and half of my ex's fat auto pension! There are ways to succeed.

Michigan job MARY is horrible. I have experience from 4 different non related environments covering defense-Aerospace, bio pharma, engine development from different Industries and even have past automotive expertise and can’t land a job. I recently had 3 interviews w/a company and didn’t get the job offer. I have also interviewed for c-ap joke paying jobs as a parts delivery driver and even applied for a clerk job at a local dry cleaners ....to get money coming in ....something and am lowering my skill experience and still can’t land a job even after hearing quite often “you have a very impressive resume and great experience.”. What I’ve experienced this year in trying to land a job is the same shoes I’ve walked when the economy fell in 2008-09. The monthly jobs report we all hear is pure garbage data plus who can pay monthly mortgage and expenses with the $11.00/hr job which represents at least 80% or more of the jobs that are available in Michigan.

Over 50. Good luck. And if you are a white male over 50 who is not a VET or disabled can just forget about a career. We are lucky to be offered a low paying job. I cannot believe how my professional life has gone to the c-apper.

Yes. Plan on taking a significant pay cut if you are lucky enough to find a job. Kroger did this to me 5 years ago and I am.far from recovered.
