Thread regarding Fry's Electronics layoffs

Is it just one guy going to every store and commenting on here?

Every day for like the past two months this site gets bombarded with store reports, all similarly written, about the lousy state of Fry's stores across the country. While I don't doubt the company is going down, there's no way this is all different people writing these. No other retailers have so many store by store updates of demise on here like Fry's, not even friggin Sears.

Is it just one guy, traveling across the country and checking out dying electronics stores, like a guy who decides to go to every Major League ballpark during the baseball season?

Customers walk into Fry's Electronic, see the empty shelves. To find out what is happening with Fry's, google search "Fry's Electronic closing". On top of the google search results, people end up commenting on this website.

@1dux - yelp, it was a religious pilgrimage for me as well. I'd get excited every time I walk into the store. That's why I keep an eye on what's going on.

As for Sears, they could close 5000 stores and I would not care.

It's not the same as Sears. Sears had thousands and thousands of locations at the height of it's powers. Fry's has what, like 30? Not very hard for people to keep tabs on each spot with in-person updates and feedback.

And I would argue that there was no 'rabid Sears fanbase' like you got with Fry's. Circa early 2000's when I used to live hours away from the closest location, it was damn near a religious pilgrimage for me and my buddies to travel there, lol. For the last decade I've lived with a Fry's location on my way home from work. Going there didn't have quite the same gravitas it did back in the day, but was still at least a once a week stop for whatever or just to browse.

The reason it's a constant stream of reports is the folks like us who notice the local store has some serious problems that employees won't talk about, and do a quick "is Fry's closing" search end up here, end up reading through the comments, and post an essentially "me too" post. They're going to sound the same because it's the same story at every location.

It must be at least two people because I have posted only once – the recent "Dying in Austin". The report for Austin is true and my opinions are honest. There's more: the aisle that used to have "impulse purchase items" now has a row of "Frys" labeled tote bags – a holdover from the Austin's failed "no more plastic bags" policy. Those bags are nothing but placeholders now, they're not going to sell. The big, marble-floored center aisle which used to have rotating displays of merchandise is now empty all the way to the back of the store.

Why so many reports? For many people this store was the last place in town to obtain electronic supplies: wire, solder, transistors, computer cases, plugs, jacks, connectors, etc. All of the older electronic supply houses in Austin have closed, Radio Shack is gone and Best Buy has a pitiful supply of some computer parts. – the other stuff, forget it. The social aspect of the store is gone also: people talking about motherboards, memory, builds, the then-new flat screen TVs, etc.

General merchandise stores like Sears have closed down but so have others like Montgomery Ward and K-Mart. People have alternatives: Target and Walmart. What if the last Target or Walmart in town closed? It would be a big deal.

Frys is the last one in Austin for the electronic enthusiasts. It's distressing to watch.
