I thought it odd some years ago when fake perfumes greeted the shopper upon entrance into the store. Seemed so out of place. Now today the perfumes have their own aisle and what used to be the massive DVD section is now "as seen on TV"-type junk. Entire rows are empty. The computer section was THE place to go, especially on weekends. Dozens of people building or modifying their computers. Now it's like a ghost town and the ghosts have left. Scattered remnants of stock. It would challenging to even find the components to build a computer. The SSDs are gone. Video cards are out. The top shelves used to have stacks of motherboards, now only a few stragglers on the shelf. A peek in the back areas for holding stock reveal mostly shelving. The retail computer section is pitiful: the islands that used to display rows of laptops are mostly empty. The Apple island now has placards for ipads where there used to be demos. The Dell island looks completely abandoned. Not much in the way of keyboards. The accessories are dwindling rapidly. The center snack, coffee section cut its hours to lunch only. Old, ragged display of discontinued headphones adorn the personal audio section. The back corner that was always crowded (DVD players and TVs) is sparse – the DVD players left some years ago and hardly anyone is in that back corner anymore. I used to make trips to the store in the early days of HDTV just to watch some HDTV. In those days, Fry's selection of flat-panel HDTVs was second to none. The camcorder displays have been removed and the carpet has not been replaced leaving "stripes" of worn and new carpet. It means they're not investing money into the store itself. What I think is telling are the palettes in the back of the store with product wrapped in plastic with a note instructing "store ##". I may be wrong, but I think the Fry's stores are being used as mini-warehouses to help balance stock amongst the other stores. The overwhelming majority of the 40+ checkout computers sit unused – and haven't been used for years. The "cage" housing memory and SSD drives is mostly bare. We're nearly at Christmas-time and some stores are starting to ramp up their stock in preparation for the season. I'm not seeing this at all and appears that Fry's is trying to clear out as fast as it can. A shame, Fry's used to be so cool, now even the air-conditioning isn't even working properly. I feel bad for the employees, many have been working there for years but, one-by-one they're disappearing as well.
