When you are given PTO at the start of the half, it is expected that you work the rest of the year. If you use all of it, and do not work until the end of the year, you owe that money back.
It is done like this so that you can pre plan your pto before you accrue it.
If you left voluntarily or was terminated for performance or attendance that is on you.
If you were laid off... and they docked your pay for used pto that is scumbag behavior.
If you didn't earn it, you should have to pay it back. They paid you in advance for a day off that you took. You did not get to finish the year out, so you didn't earn that paid day off. Why is this such a perplexing thing to people? It's pretty simple.
Did you take pto? You usually have to pay it back because they give it in advance so If you get fired you didnt earn the pto
