Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Unionizing (HQ, Retail, NAD)

Hello everyone,

Realizing that Staples is relentless at laying people off, has anyone thought about unionizing? Yes, there are cons, but there are also pros.

The layoffs are going to continue! You're going to be impacted eventually! Might as well protect yourself!

If there is an interest, speak up.

You will look back and say either; I protected myself and my income. OR I did nothing and can only blame myself for losing my job and everything that results from it.

Organize!

Staples employees are too demoralized to petition for a union and the bosses know it. We tried when I was at the FC in Atlanta. People are so scared and I for one can understand. We all have families to support and the mere mention of forming a union can get you out the door. Trust me they will find a write up a year ago and try to fire you, I’ve seen it happen. Truth be told the employee still left at Staples really don’t have much to lose. Staples got until 2025 at most. The company is practically dead as we speak. So glad I found another job before it got as bad as it is now. My old coworkers tell me it’s morale is at a all time low. Don’t suffer with Staples the economy is booming get your resumes out there and live.

There are zero labor unions interested in the 12 people at your store that want to unionize. 12 people is not enough money for them to hire the lawyer to have the state legally recognize the union. Plus the average turn over of a store is 1 year. This is not worth it to anyone.

Union or not, if your store creates a union, the store will fire all of you. Cause the other option is you strike, and really that isn't going to make a difference. You are replaceable. Your do not have a job that requires crazy skills. I hate to be so straight forward about this, but there isn't a need to unionize. You won't get anything out of it other than less money in your paycheck.

Pursue all options and protect yourself. The company doesn’t care about any of us. It’s a me me me mentality right now and it doesn’t matter who steps over who to get to the top. Although all they are fighting for is who gets to the top of a pile of something I don’t want to be at the top of. It stinks where ever you walk these days.

Ya know. This is an important thread. How do we go about looking into unionizing?

Fact: You cannot be fired for organizing nor partaking in unionizing.

You can be fired for wearing the color red on Friday in at-will states.

If the firing was during unionizing, then there would need to be a very vivid paper trail of misconduct on the person fired. If not, the person fired would be receiving a big check from Staples after Staples loses in court

They want to SELL retail. They can't do that now cause it has near ZERO value and NO ONE wants it. Unionizing will make the value LESS than ZERO and insure that ALL Staples Stores will close, so NO ONE will have a job! BRILLIANT!

In a previous role at another company, I was in a union. I joined because others did. I personally thought it was unnecessary. Go to find out, it saved so many of us. In a big company that's in constant turmoil, it's highly recommended to unionize.

Yes, and with a union, we can get better health insurance instead of having HR and SLT kick that can down the road another decade. Each year it's the same story "We're looking at it".

With a union, we can negotiate collectively and ensure that layoffs benefit everyone. Including those at lower levels.

"Not represented by a union, but want to be?

If a majority of workers wants to form a union, they can select a union in one of two ways: If at least 30% of workers sign cards or a petition saying they want a union, the NLRB will conduct an election. If a majority of those who vote choose the union, the NLRB will certify the union as your representative for collective bargaining. An election is not the only way a union can become your representative. Your employer may voluntarily recognize a union based on evidence - typically signed union-authorization cards - that a majority of employees want it to represent them. Once a union has been certified or recognized, the employer is required to bargain over your terms and conditions of employment with your union representative. Special rules apply in the construction industry."
