I'm surprised with all those odd, straggling stores, in far flung places around the country, that they decided to close Temple City, which is in LA County, the largest single county in the country! There appears no rhyme or reason to where they close stores. North Dakota has 700,000 people and their store remains, yet LA County, which has over 10 million people, loses their store. Go figure LOL!

60 Kmarts left!
If Temple City,
Should happen to fall
59 Kmarts left on the wall.

(You Know what song it's from).

Got another one reduced! Temple City CA Kmart is history! 59 left, boys and girls! BOOM! Almost there.

Maybe I should have written "mall", instead of "wall". Oh well, judgement CALL, mall, or wall. I'll stop now.

@smqb Good points, all. Few more observations: OH has about 12 million people, GA/NC each have 10 million, none of those 3 states have a store. Yet, ya, as you mentioned, tiny ND, MT, NH still have 1 each. North Dakota is the 4th smallest state in the country, and the smallest that still has a Kmart (in Minot though they may close soon).
Just weird, the ones they decided to keep open, for now.

Just saw this list. I am trying to make sense out of it. CA is the biggest, state, of course so that makes sense. But Texas is second biggest with about 30 million people, yet it has 1 store. New Mexico, with only 2 million people has twice as many stores as TX, LOL. North Dakota with about 700,000 people is the smallest state with a Kmart, and they have the exact same amount (one), as Texas, the second biggest state in the country. Montana, also has the same amount of stores as Texas. NJ has 9 million people, about one third the population of Texas, yet has 5 Times as many Kmarts.
There seems no rhyme or reason to the distribution of the remaining stores. The remaining Kmart in TX is Mcallen, which is waaaay southeast of the state, not even close to the next closest location, which would be in New Mexico. Just oddly placed, these remaining stores.

The latests genius obfuscation tactic is to stop store closing lists and do one-offs only, so you're just going to have to get blue balled.

Ya, let's get some closings announced, soon. Tired of reading about Eddie's leadership, HE happenings, outsourcing to India, vendors, etc.. Let's read about some damn Kmarts closing! That's what we're here for. We are in the 9th inning, Kmart down 20-0, 2 outs, 2 strikes. FINISH THE FREAKING GAME AND END THIS STUPID COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those onesies, twosies states are going. CA, FL, NY may take a bit longer to get rid of, but we'll blast them out soon enough. We should get this list chopped down in a jiffy, thankfully. :)

@qgdd I think sooner, dude. Either This Month Or Next (the announcements).

Post ID: @qxba+11UQa9Ri

@nxag I'm willing to bet even before then possibly. I'm predicting that after a bad Christmas season, more store closings will be announced in February or March and those ones will probably close in April or May, and any stores still hanging on after that will close by the end of Summer 2020 (July or August probably)

by

Post ID: @qgdd+11UQa9Ri

For fun, let's organize them (48 US stores) by Time Zone:
PST: 10 in CA, 1 in WA, 1 in NV: Total of 12
MST: 1 in CO, 1 in MT, 2 in NM: Total of 4
CST: 1 in ND, 1 in MN, 1 in IL, 1 in TX: Total of 4
EST: 6 in NY, 5 in NJ, 5 in PA, 4 in FL, 2 in MA, 2 in NC, 2 in MD, 1 in NH, 1 in MI: Total of 28

Why did I do this? Well I was just bored LOL. But shows a heavy East Coast bias. And slightly on West Coast too. The entire middle of the country is hollow, in terms of Kmarts. And they are a midwest-based company (along with Sears, based in Illinois).

From Wikipedia, "At its peak in 1994, Kmart operated 2,486 stores globally, including 2,323 discount stores and Super Kmart Center locations in the United States."

So we're down to 60 out of 2486. About 2.4% of stores left, LMAO. In other words, 2426 out of 2486 (about 97.6%) of Kmarts have closed. If this were a baseball game, Kmart is down 30-0 in the bottom of the 9th, with 2 outs, nobody on, and 2 strikes. If this were a football game, they're down 40-0 with 30 Seconds left, no Timeouts, and the other team has the ball on their 10 yard line.

Just put that in perspective. Almost 98% of their peak stores closed. Why they don't put this turkey out of its misery is beyond me. Even the most loyal baseball fans, if their team was down that big in the 9th inning, would be like swing at the first pitch and get the game over with. Don't worry about bunting for a base hit or working the count. The game is over. Go home.

@iszo It's quite possible that they keep Des Plains open, but also just as likely that they don't. Yes, IL is their home state, but they closed all the other Kmarts in the state. Geographically, the closest other Kmart to it is the one remaining Kmart in Michigan (Marshall). So it gets into the economy of scale scenario, again. But ya, if the store is Profitable (I don't Know if it is or not), then it may stick around for A Quick Minute. But they're all likely closing Next Year anyway.

I could be wrong, but I doubt Des Plaines closes anytime soon, just due to proximity to HE, at least until they’re officially throwing in the towel. Too many teams visit that location to see how merchandising/signing/etc. strategies are working.

It’s the same reason West Dundee avoided so many lists until the most recent one. (Yes, I realize Schaumburg is almost as close, but so much of the personnel lives in Elgin/west of the campus.)

@hosa I'm not sure all of the northeast will remain. The NYC stores, ya, for a while, but NJ, PA, eyc., will likely close. As for NC, I think they're done because no nearby states have any stores. And Guam will probably stay as its the most Profitable store.

I am guessing Minot ND, will close soon (no announcement yet though), because as someone else posted, their lease is due to end.

Like others have already mentioned, I imagine the Kmart stores in states that only have one or two locations (McAllen, Loveland, Des Plaines, Hamilton, etc) will probably be the next ones to go. The ones in the Northeast, California (+ Vegas maybe) and South Florida (maybe the two in North Carolina as well) will probably stay open still, but I imagine their time will be up soon too.

Excellent point, by someone below, about the stores not being "Geographically coherent". I like that term. If the stores were in some type of region, it might make sense. But if they are randomly located, like someone through darts at a map while blindfolded (as it looks now), then it simply makes no sense to have random stores so far apart from each other. This simply can't, and won't last.

I posted this in another thread, but WTF, I'll just post it here too: Sears will still have over 100 stores, so I guess that's SOMETHING. But Kmart, with only 48 on the mainland US, in 19 states (BTW, thanks to that dude who keeps putting up that Kmart list....their website is extremely out of Date), is an absolute joke. More like a parody of a joke. 10 or so states with 1 store each, another 4 states with 2 stores each. WTH is that? 1 random store in Burlington Washington, then 600 mile east, there's a tiny random store in Montana, then nothing within about 800 miles east of it, then, going east from Montana, you find 1 in that huge shopping town (LOL) of Minot North Dakota, then about 600 miles east, there is 1 store in Minneapolis, then another about 500 miles east of that, they have 1 in Illinois. Then go a few more states east, you'll find 1 random store left in Marshall, Michigan, then you need to go another 600 or so miles east to find a few decrepit, derelict, Pennsylvania stores left, then east another 150 miles, to a few random NJ stores, then the NYC stores east of that. Did someone throw darts at a map and decide where to keep the open Kmarts? Are they trolling us at this point? What is this? I mean, if they were going to keep a few stores open, at least have them Geographically coherent in some way.
Then on the other extreme, there are 2 stores, Kearney & Belleville NJ, which are like 2 miles apart. Which for me, is a brisk walk. They HAVE to be taking business away from each other. How does this make sense? Some Kmarts are almost 1000 miles from the nearest other Kmart while others are walkable to each other. SMDH.

Someone on another thread was nice enough to share list of which stores were owned as opposed to leased. As for mainland Kmarts, there are only 6 remaining that are owned, and not closed or closing. They are reflected with a letter "O" below. Just bear in mind that this may have no factor in closings, as when I went through the list of owned stores, many have closes, so just because a location is owned, it is by no means safe from closing. Here is the list of Seritage owned properties: https://www.seritage.com/properties

And here is my list again: I UPDATED my list to show which stores are owned, based on the good information that my friend 3fqm provided. 6 stores are owned by Seritage, and they are listed below, with a letter "O". This was only done for Kmart stores on the mainland:

At the very least, the states with 1 or 2 locations will close. They cannot ship to these far-flung, isolated locales. The areas with multiples, like CA or FL may linger just a bit longer, but not much.
