Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

It’s like they’re not even trying to hide the age discrimination?

Literally all of the people that I’ve seen being laid off recently are older, long-time employees and I don’t think that that pattern is going to change any time soon. They aren’t even trying to mask that fact. Are our Age discrimination laws really that faulty that the company can practice it at such an obvious level?

My attorney said it wasn’t worth it. They would fight it for years. Best to move on

Good luck getting any settlement for age discrimination. It will cost you tens of thousands of dollars to sue. Ever know anyone who has actually got an age discrimination settlement? Its because it rarely...rarely happens.

I have a friend who was let go in his early 60's. Solid performer. He went to a couple of attorneys. The attorneys told him to move on with his life. Not worth it.

Yes they start with higher earners who skew older (except for the ones who make real decisions). We saw that pattern consistently.

Wage Discrimination

Correlation doesn’t equate to causation. Yes, longer tenured members of the organization seem to be those who are released more frequently but they also tend to be the most costly. It’s due to their salaries, not age.

Most companies get around it by providing evidence they discriminated by salary which is not a protected class, not age.

Correct, HOWEVER, if the company violated any employment laws (age discrimination) then it does not matter what you signed. You can still sue, and they can be held liable.

When you accept a severance you have to sign an agreement that you won’t sue them: otherwise you won’t get it.
