Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM Resource Action 2020

Not my thread, here I am recycling 2018 and 2019 threads. Starting early this year. For 2019 and 2018, see @VZzqzzM and @OLbfSBK - not changing anything except years...

I will be the first one to start it – let’s talk about IBM Resource Action for 2020. I know that there are some rumors already floating around, but let’s consolidate things in this thread. In short I’d like to address the following:

  • Timing of Resource Actions – are we going to see quarterly boosts throughout 2020?
  • Size of layoffs – are we going to exceed, in size, 2019 layoffs – should we brace for a mega cut?
  • Geographies – where will 2020 layoffs going to be concentrated? East? West? US vs other geographies?
  • Verticals – What groups will be hit the most as it relates to the upcoming resource actions?
  • That’s all that comes to mind right now – I am sure I am omitting some other important stuff but that’s what I have right now…

Thoughts?

Information has it IBM is once again going to start the push for colocation. Relocation packages are a drop in the bucket to cover the cost to move. Of course colocation is just a way to reduce resource actions by forcing people off payroll who can't move.

Concerned GBS FLM - I'm sure you have been around IBM to know the answer to this. IBM is absolutely brutal about RA's. I had to fire so many good people it made me sick.

Does everyone think that IBM is truly going to go thru with this lay-off a miss what is going on in this country right now. Do they not understand that the person they lay off may be married to, let’s say, a waitress, who can not work and make any money right now. Do you think IBM will finally put the employees first. Concerned US FLM in GBS

GBS NA will not mass RA. They will do bench management instead. In the UK, there will be >100 people let go at end of April. The consultation period starts next week. In other countries, there’s barely anyone left locally in GBS other than in Germany and they can’t get rid of the glut of people that easily. Natural attrition will prevail until all of GBS is based in India

Rumors about a RA @ GBS have been swirling for a while - honestly, if we hit a recession (and it looks like things will slow down for sure) GBS is first on the chopping block (drop in client spend)

Oh, should have said yesterday - was out late last night. I assure you this is not BS. Timetable is for consultation from March 10 to April 24

I call BS given that the comment was been made at 2am in the UK, it could not yet have referred to "today" whose workday would not start for at least another 6 hours, and if they meant yesterday we would have heard concrete reports.

GBS will have a round of RA's coming up possibly in the next few days. Mostly East Coast. Not sure of the scope but hopefully not large scale.

I heard just last week this: IBM towards April end is going to run a PR stint showcasing how it has contributed to medical science and human advancement over past 100 years. Then in May 2nd week it is going to announce massive layoffs citing restructuring efforts.

Band 10 employees, Some D band Partners will be the first to go in 2020. They are pushing lower levels to move into billable slots. Also the new collar people will be taking the place of off shore workers since they can pay them $5 more than local retail jobs in the US and be more cost effective than offshore billing rates. AKA they are losing contracts left and right. Federal is a disaster, GBS is nothing but overpriced finger pointers and getting pushed out by Wipro, Tata, AWS, Microsoft and the like. If you are over 45, at 75% or more of band level and don't have your manager brown nosed, get ready.

Purging older workers and expecting new grads to replace them is s–c-dal, and that's why IBM is dying.

I met all of my objectives year in year out since 2010. Surpassed expectations on more objectives than I met. Does not mean anything. Few seem to know what’s going on. Those who do know, they fear reprisal. So, no one has got your back. You are on your own. Many decision makers live in a virtual world; an alternate reality incompatible with humanistic values. Don’t get me wrong. Millennials are great. But if that is all you’ve got, you will miss out on the wisdom acquired over an extended work experience. Bottom line, as long as upper management stays the same, nothing will change. I left last year and that was one of the best moves I ever made in my professional career. I recommend you be ready and look around, and not let the culture of fear and abusive environment dictate what will be decided for you...especially once you >45.

Have you been ReAd or terminated by IBM Canada. Do you need advise to understand your true options including engaging a lawyer. I have been through this process and have learned so much through my personal experience and spending over 200 hours interviewing other former IBMers that have been through a termination and in researching cases through the legal system.
I have been advising other IBMer friends going through this and willing to advise other former IBM Canada employees looking for help.
Please reach out to me at the following email address : FormerIBMerAdvisingIBMers@shaw.ca.
I am here to give you advise so you are informed as you get through this process.

IBM needs to reduce the building count more than the headcount.

I can just hear the department meetings , “ We need to reduce headcount, things aren’t going well , can anyone think of reductions we can do by eliminating work ? Think outside the box ok “.

In my part of IBM there have been plenty of senior and executive “involuntary exits”. We’re all victims of the machine, whether junior or senior. Fairly certain IBM has actually targeted a reduction in high level bands and executives. Pushing these people out is done just as arbitrarily and nastily as any other level.

IBM during the 3rd q conf call spelled out two problem children. A GTS 4% revenue short fall that will come in the 4th Q, and a 1-1.5% currency headwind. So if we assume Z15 adds a billion to the bottom line, the revenue numbers doesn’t budge. If anything goes wrong, there will be a revenue shortfall. NOTE I didn’t say a profit shortfall, as Z15 should be quite profitable. So you need to ask what are the odds that IBM hits every other measurement. I’m not positive that’s going to happen, thus my betting there will be some Nov -Dec trimming to make the numbers work

Could this be the year that managers and high level staff get hit ? IBM has outsourced just about everything. It will be interesting to see them feed in each other.

Service will again be hit hard . This is a bare bones operation with team leaders and overpaid managers who haven’t a clue what they are doing. The commands come down from the top , cut , cut and cut and we don’t care who it is , you the manager make that happen. 100,000 people got cut who told another 100,000 who told , well you get the picture. IBM is toast , they crossed the line .

IBM has pushed all of their chips to the middle of the table. 3rd Q was a disaster from any point of view that you wish to take. (revenue, profit, Redhat, strategic, cloud, etc etc). IBM is betting the farm on Z15 in 4th Q. There is not any other place to harvest revenue or profit, EXCEPT to cut costs. NOTE services has already said during the 3rd q call that they are going to be weak in the 4th. It’s not shaping up the way IBM had primed the street for
