Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Life After Staples

Many great former colleagues of mine were let go last week. I’d like them all to know that there IS life after Staples and it’s a damn fine life.

Unemployment is 3.7% and most great employers can’t find employees. Staples on the other hand can’t keep great employees. What was once a great company is now nothing but a high priced purveyor or obsolete products that nobody needs.

So don’t stress out my friends, there are great jobs at great companies that would love to have you. Unfortunately Staples is neither.

TO: I've only been here for only about 4 months, should I be leaving?

after what you saw the last few weeks you ask that? No you should stay right where you are, you'll be pulling down 6 figures in no time.

"Can’t get same pay, vacation time, short commute and flexible schedule elsewhere. Gonna ride it out as long as I can for my family."

Then you deserve what you get. It is easier to find a job commensurate with your experience and salary needs when you have a job. Waiting until you get inevitably canned is a great way to give yourself a pay cut and possibly be out of work a lot longer than you think.

I'm the only one able to provide medical benefits for my family (spouse is self-employed) and that was the main driver for making the switch when the opportunity appeared. Take control of your career while you still have control. Once you're severed, that control goes away. I have a friend in his late 40s who got laid off (different company not Staples) and rather than jump right in, decided to ride out his lengthy severance and work in a part time gig just to keep busy. 2 years in and no job offers have appeared.

Do not wait.

Only if you’re under 50. If you’re older you are screwed!!! Companies don’t want to hire old people.
