Is there a 12$ dividend for current ESPP purchased on 14th August

Do we get 12$ at the deal close for ESPP which is purchased yesterday on 15th August?

I live in California. I have quite a few shares of SYMC. Paying out a $12 dividend means I will lose about 50% of that to CA and Fed taxes, then the stock price drops by $12. There is no win here, unless you are looking for a short term gain to buy a boat.

When the div is paid, share price will drop by $12. The dividend sets a floor on the share value- even if share price goes down before the dividend date, we can count on our shares being worth at least $12.

Yes the dividend gets paid. And of course there is money to be made from the dividend. That's ridiculous to say otherwise. Just different strategies one could take, which include for example selling before the dividend. Or maybe holding etc. But yes benefited greatly from dividend.

Yes, anyone that purchases any shares before the dividend is paid will get the $12 dividend. This is because the share price will drop by $12 accordingly when the dividend is paid. The same thing happened in March 2016 when they paid a $4 dividend (see: https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/SYMC/history?period1=1456963200&period2=1457136000&interval=1d&filter=history&frequency=1d). Make no mistake, there is no money to be made from the dividend.

ESPP shares that have already been purchased are yours and you are treated the same as any other investor in common shares. If you don't excercise those shares before the dividend is paid out then you should receive the dividend. However, keep in mind that when the one-time $12 dividend is paid out, the stock price will likely fall by a similar amount.
