Thread regarding Anadarko Petroleum Corp. layoffs

For those considering VSP, why would you not take it?

75% of people at OXY offered the VSP, that means 25% said a couple of years salary was not enough to leave.

As an APC employee weighing my options, why would you not take it? I would expect different reasons from different people. I’m just trying to get my mind past the pile of cash and think things through.

I haven’t seen the VSP offer yet. There are rumors that the PTO pay out and 150% bonus multiplier won’t be included, which means it won’t be equivalent to COC. If that’s the case, $50k+ is too much to leave on the table. If that’s the case, then I’ll just stay and wait. If they lay me off with full COC, great. If not, then I’ll stay and do the bare minimum for Oxy. You’re still protected under COC for 3 years, which means you’re protected from future downturn potential and likely additional layoffs. It’ll be glorious, and I’ll keep getting paid every day. Oxy has done NOTHING to try to entice us or meld our cultures, so I will do nothing for them in return.

It's difficult to get a good job at a great company.

You may land something else eventually. But be prepared for buy outs, bankruptcies, asset sales, and layoffs at other companies.

If you are coming to a message board to make a career decision you are insane.

If you plan to stay in oil and gas it might take you two years to find a new job. The industry is shedding jobs. So financially you haven’t gained anything. You just bought yourself two years vacation. If you have something else (new career) that you want to jump into the take the money and run!
