Thread regarding Symantec Corp. layoffs

No meeting, no layoff?

I see people mentioning they know they are being let go today because they already have meetings scheduled. Does this mean those of us who don't have anything scheduled for today or Friday can consider ourselves safe? Or is that just my wishful thinking?

I didn’t have a scheduled meeting when I was RIF’d. My boss stopped by my cube at 1:30 and said we had to talk, and it was then I knew I was on the list.

The most important thing is, whatever happens, don't take on a victim mentality. You can look it at two different ways brown-nosing or relationship building. The glass can be half-full or half-empty. Having a good relationship with your team doesn't mean you kiss their a–, it just means you get along. Sometimes it comes down to the numbers, but if you are a value add your are less likely to be chopped. Soft skills are just as important as technical skills.

Ummm, when your manager, and his\her manager are also get let go, no about of brown-nosing is going to keep your job. Thinking you are getting laid off based on job performance is naive. Rarely happens that way.

Spare a thought for all the contractors... they have no protection or redundancy to fall back on.

You’re probably good.

Perhaps they are waiting closer to today’s announcement.

Your manager or their manager is dreading this conversation just as much as you are. So remember that. None of anyone’s team today wants to see you or anyone go unless you were a lazy employee.

Just think about it. Did you do your job? Is your relationship good with your manager or theirs? Were you responsive in terms of emails, being prompt, and collaboration? Or did you spit out big ideas and not act on any of it? If you are an in-office employee did you abuse the flex-working privilege? Did you meet quotas if there was one? How many of your job are there? Is your team stacked too big? Could you do with less? Etc… You should be able to gauge how safe you are.

There is a ton of politics that go into employment, remember that. It’s not just about the work.

In the future ask yourself this, would I lay myself off? Refer to the above, that’s a good way to ensure you keep your job next time if you do get cut. If you get cut, it’s not the end of the world, you will bounce back, and Symantec leadership will support you finding a new job.

Just remember, none of this is personal, it may feel that way, but those are your emotions, and bottom line it’s just business.

Also, don’t waste time stressing out over any of this, it’s either coming, or it’s not. You won’t know until you know. Update your resume, and have a plan b.

Good luck!

If your manager is on PTO that could just mean you'll have a meeting when they are back. It's also likely that there is more than one wave.
