Thread regarding Whiting Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Those that are left better beware.

I worked at Whiting and was cut before this happened. Now I'm glad because I got out ahead of this and landed another decent oil and gas job. There isn't nearly as much out there now as private equity is starting to tighten the purse strings.

My company is very well connected to a lot of the other Denver oil companies. The very well informed word on the street is Holly's end game is to strip Whiting to the bone and sell the carcass.

Whiting is using the Golden Handcuff scenario as well as other tricks to get employees to drink the Kool Aid. However I've seen this almost exact scenario play out before. Trust me.....Those that are left are on borrowed time. Best of luck. You'll need it.

And they keep letting the same old players at the game board despite numerous complaints and high turnover. Someone's got their head up someone else's ... and it won't ever change until they are gone.

Whiting just announced their shiny new Director of Exploration and G&G. No true exploration experience. Good at attending meetings though.

You made a good post.
Definitely beware of the golden handcuffs.

As a formerly golden-handcuffed employee at another company, I know the tricks.
One trick they use is loading you up with stock options and grants.
You think "I'll be walking away from hundreds of thousands of dollars of stock right now, and this could be worth a ridiculously large amount of money if our stock price even gets back to what it was a few years ago." You will never get the change to sell those at even close to the value you hope.

The grants and options don't mature until a few years into the future. By that time, they will be worthless or close to it.

Walk away. Better to get in earlier at a stable company, and to choose where you end up.

Whiting just doesn't have the acreage left to drill their way out. Unless some miracle happens, unless they discover some great find on their exploration projects, or oil somehow goes to $150 per bbl, Whiting is dying. It will be dead soon. James Volker dug our grave. Brad Holly is the undertaker.

Don't drink the Kool-Aid.

Kodiak merger actually gave Whiting a ship to unload onto. Kodiak had tons of drilling acreage, and some good stuff. Whiting would have ended much quicker without it.

Heard similar....The Kodiak merger torpedoed that ship. It's been slowly sinking ever since.
