Thread regarding Symantec Corp. layoffs

Question for those who were already laid off

If any of you still occasionally visit this forum - can you please tell us if you were able to find a new job by now? And if you did, how does it compare to your previous job at Symantec (pay, benefits, work environment?)

More layoffs are imminent here, so knowing that people are doing well would be great. And even if not, it'd be nice to be prepared for what's to come.

The tech job market in the SF Bay Area is hot, and has been so for a couple of years. I got multiple offers from companies with better long-term prospects, ranging from 20% to 50% higher total compensation (even when assuming their stock will not grow).

My team got RIF’d in June. All of us (except 1) got new jobs within a month.

Less than 2% unemployment rates in US for tech - plenty of jobs to be had. Several folks are already getting good offers well ahead of the block.

  1. update your linked-in while you still have access to records of what you've done at SYMC

You can set linked-in profile to not show any changes until you're ready to open it for "actively looking"

  1. use linked-in to customize your resume for every job application
  2. take advantage of services that SYMC included in severance-package, like resume-review, interview-practice, and even job-search
  3. if you can afford it, take a breather. Go somewhere you've always wanted to go with your loved ones. I didn't look actively for 3 months.
  4. Let your old colleagues who no longer at SYMC know you got RIF'ed. All the ones I talked to were very very helpful. At the very least, they were excellent in listening to my complaints, and provided laughters with good-old-war-story from SYMC time.

Good luck... it's not the end of the world... keep your head up...

I found out I may be on the chopping block. First thing I did was I reactivated leetcode premium and have been practicing everyday. I also updated my LinkedIn and reached out to many friends. The market is very hot but very competitive. Ive been getting calls from many recruiters and have been interviewing a lot. Close to getting 2 offers. Aim for FAANG, you will definitely get into something. Good luck.

FWIW, I know quite a few people that went on to other positions recently after getting RiF'd. There are a good number of jobs out there. Update your resume, update your LinkedIn. If you get let-go then turn on the setting to allow recruiters to contact you. You'll be fine, don't mindfuck yourself into thinking that you're not going to find a replacement for SYMC. Gotta have a positive attitude on it.
