Waiting for severance is a mistake

Most of us are just waiting around for severance.

You do know severance is not a guarantee, right? I hear so many people saying this same thing, and I can't understand it. Severance is not guaranteed by any law. Staples can decide tomorrow to discontinue providing severance - and there would be nothing illegal about that.

If you have a chance to leave Staples on your own terms, do it. Don't wait for something that might never come.

severance saves lives, SP would love to discontinue it but is afraid of what might happen.

Some of us have the advantage of being young (30), so if the axe falls, age discrimination likely wont be an issue in the job seeking world which may lessen the sting of no severance. Been here 5 years. Little room to move up in my department. Feel very underappreciated. At this point, the axe may be like a lifeboat off the Titanic. Oh well. The plan is working afterall!

you can be let go with nothing or maybe a couple of months salary, vs getting started with a new employer now. no one knows what the future holds so a sure job else where is the smart move.

Perspective employers hold little value anyone with "Staples" experience. Staples is a joke of the business world.

Good Advice. It is ALWAYS easier to find a job when you have a job. Most recruiters wouldn't think much about being laid off from Staples, but still not a great risk to take.
