So I’m trying to use my last week of vacation time, however, my store manager is denying my request due to lack of staffing. The thing is- on our “request off calendar” he has 2 weeks crossed out for when he is taking 2 vacations.....any thoughts on how I should handle this?

Its a request, not a right. We all have a business to run, no matter our title.
Why call ethics line? If you still can take vacation at another time then there is no issue. Just because the week you REQUESTED was denied. It is a request, you just have to take another time. I suppose your sm could hire more employees and cut your hours so that way when you request time off there is coverage. How would you like those apples? Unfortunately you can’t have it both ways. There is not an ethical issue here unless your sm says you can’t take a vacation at all.
Call the ethics line and let the smart people figure it out.
This is actually a corporate problem, as essentially they’ve created a catch-22 situation. First off yes, a request is just that, a request, not a guarantee. However, if you have vacation time, then you are allowed to use that time, and you can’t be denied the opportunity to use that accrued vacation time. Except if too many people want the same time off, then that’s where problems come in, because not everyone can all have the same time off. That’s also where the “corporate catch-22” comes in. Cvs has cut hours to the bone, but also has said NO overtime no matter what! And yet the store still needs to be covered, and yes it’s the SM’s job to ensure the store has coverage. But, if you take a week off, then who covers your shifts? And if you only have 4 managers to begin with, and one takes a vacation, how do you cover a week’s worth of management shifts with only 3 managers without going into OT? Or what happens if someone gets sick while you’re away and now you’re down to just 2 managers? That’s where corporate has us in a bind. Cover the store without going into OT. And they don’t care if you have to work slave shifts in order to cover the store.
A manager cant deny a vacation request because of staffing unless multille people request same ti They can if it is a regular request but not if its vacation. Your entitled to that time and its part of the managers job to staff the store. You don't forfeit your vacation because your manager can't perform ther responsibilities
Wrong, the manager has every right to deny it. That’s why it’s a request. Jumping the chain of command just makes you look bad and won’t accomplish anything. Not saying this manager is good or not, I don’t know them.
As long as the vacations aren't at the same time, your manager can't deny you. As a store manager I didn't care if it inconvenienced my store if they took a vacation. Its a matter of respect for your people. That manager can't staff their store? That's the manager's problem not yours. Think of this scenario: A manager can't close the store if the shift closing at night calls out so if they can't figure it out it, they are stuck. This scenario is no different. You need to talk to your DM if the manager denied you. Simply tell your manager you would like to ask the district leader why. You have to be able to have an awkward conversation every now and then if you don't want to be taken advantage of. A vacation request can't be denied like a regular request off unless it interferes with another request. If you don't get a timely response, call advice and counsel.
Your boss is your boss. If you don’t like it leave. Respect that it’s their store, they worked hard to be a store manager and it’s not that rewarding. They make the rules so step up or step out.
OP here, We each want different weeks off and his reasoning for denying my request is because he will have to close ONE extra night that week.....told him it was totally unfair(I close every Saturday and he doesn’t want to). Told him I’m taking that week off whether he schedules me or not.
Dude why do you want to work for someone like this. Tell them if they deny the request you want a transfer to a store where your life outside work is respected. You’re not a neurologist at a hospital on call you have a job where you work extremely hard and on sh–ty conditions for a company that would replace you in 3 days if you left. Value your self, man up and make a move if they don’t want to work with you.
It's only July, theres 5 months yet to give out PTO. Maybe your manager had a vacation planned for over a year and you were too slow to putting it in? Just because they're salary doesn't mean they don't also have lives.
If lack of staffing is the issue for not getting your vacation, then those same rules should apply to your manager as well. How do they get 2 weeks and you get nothing? Something's not adding up here. That having been said, no one is above the rules. However, if you and him want the same week off, then maybe only one of you can get it, not both. So maybe just take a different week off instead.
Yes, a request is just a request. But you also CAN NOT deny someone their vacation time for the whole entire year. Those hours were earned.
I don’t get why some (actually, most) managers insist are treating their employees like c-ap. That’s not how you get them to work harder!
I would handle it by sitting down and discussing why he denied it like an adult.
Requests are just that - requests that can be denied for any reason.
