Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

From a recent Glasdoor review

"The payscale has absolutely no transparency (even my supervisor doesn’t know what the pay range of my position is, let alone me), and raises, which have been capped at 1% a year for at least the last five years, were cut to 0.5% this year. (2019) No bonuses at all for employees not in management or sales."

In a historically low unemployment market, how does Cengage retain any employees with no raises or bonuses in 5 years? That is just incredible to me. The average inflation rate is ~2%, which means that employees are getting a pay decrease every year. What an insult.

It is amazing how many bitter people there are in this thread.

Cengage aside, people are actually cheering people losing their jobs. That's pretty sick.

Seems like everyone in here is a business major and can see all the issues. If book prices were lower, let's say 120 bucks, what's to stop the used book market from selling them for 50 bucks. Instructors would still say that they are using texts so give me free stuff.

I get it, you may not like Cengage because of your time there or you were a competitor, but ffs, have a little dignity and compassion for your fellow man.

It's just pathetic about how employees talk about how they're changing the world or whatever in exchange for making a market salary. Do you guys realize that you work for a for-profit company that is owned by private equity investors? What do you think their motivation is? And if leadership really cared about what was best for the student, they would shut the company's doors today and let every professor move to an OER model. Free course materials is what's best for students.

Yes, it's obvious money doesn't motivate whoever is left at Cengage, it's obvious to all of us.

Money isn't what motivates those of us who work at Cengage. It's about changing the industry and giving students and instructors what they want. That and working together across teams to push what we can do. It's the #cengageway #credo.

I tried to address the coming wave of OER with senior leadership back in 2011. You can imagine how that went over.

Cengage used to be a sales driven organization but that all came to a halt a few years ago when territories started seeing their bonuses evaporate, all by design. All the competent productive sales people have already left and gone onto jobs where they can actually make bonus and see proper rewards for their initiative. The reps, kams, csm's who are left are lower tier and are nothing more than redundant glorified data entry clerks poorly managed by uninspiring half wit DM's with absolutely nothing to offer. No matter how much pathetic virtue signalling marketing pushes out the slick advertising chute, professor's and students still want free products, and guess what. Quality free products are available and no one seems to address this enormous neon pink elephant and that's why these two organizations which have been stocked with the worst employees due to attrition are forced to merge into one enormous low paying McCengage and offer a slew of cheap garbage to everyone. It's all a nice show, enjoy.

Maybe it depends on position, I've gotten 3% the last few years. Only year I got 1%was during the bankruptcy. Of course the pay scale is crazy low.

@10aPjtaW-1nxf In this job market, most people could get another job if they wanted one. From what I've observed, most people are unwilling to leave Cengage because its the only place they know. They really believe Michael is the best CEO in the world, and that the turnaround is right around the corner. How else do you explain getting slapped in the face every year with a pay cut and turning around and saying "thank you"?

Short answer: Outside of a few areas such as software development and finance, most employees aren't qualified to work anywhere besides Cengage or its competitors. Most jobs have a very specific focus that require skills that don't transfer very well outside the industry

  • Reference Jim Jones, Guyana for the answer.

I quit a year ago, make more money and work less, anyone still left in this dump is just too lazy and afraid to find another job...
