Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

18TB HDD

Fist time to see announce new products for future year - this is a first.

Basically WD completely missed 16TB product. WD 18TB announcement is a ploy to compete with Seagate’s in-ramping 16TB. Interesting time but seriously critical. Whichever company misses will be penalized dearly.

@10Ry9PkA-kocb Press released talked about "energy-assisted recording", no mention of MAMR. They started doing this about a year ago.

If the recording surface is the same as the current products, it implies a 14% areal density increase. WD's 2016 experimental paper claimed 5-10% AD gain w/ MAMR. If Toshiba ever published experimental HDD data, I can't find it.

Is 18tb a MAMR technology drive?

Both Seagate and Toshiba are shipping 16TB for a while.

WDC is behind in 16TB capacity point, no matter how one spins it. It could only hope the adoption of 16TB is somewhat delayed to buy more time.

In terms of WD’s rescue plan with 18TB, the odd does look good.

  • WDC could not deliver 16TB in 8 platters
  • 18TB in 9 platters will be more more difficult than 16TB in 8 platters.
  • 9-platter with Aluminum disk is even more challenging.

There will be at least one more round of lay-off in order to meet the additional 100M savings per quarter until end of 2019.

WD missed and could not make 16 TB with 8 platter. Now promises to deliver 18TB with 9 platter. Go figure how dire the situation is.
