Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

They are hiring!!!

Things must be picking up. Two new hires in my department announced today. Both CW's but that means there is work and HP can afford to hire more people. Print division.

They are still hiring!! They hired 2 CW's from my group as permanent HP employees and hired 2 CW's to replace the empty positions the CW's left. All this after the layoff announcement. Yes this is happening in the print division.

It looks like the people choosing to retire are the people who's positions can't be left open at least in several departments that I am aware of.

CW pay is not quite "They are compensated 1/3 of what an HP employee earns when you consider all benefits". I know this because I am compensated at around 80% of an HP employee. I am not in production but in engineering as support, not an engineer, so that might be the difference. As a CW, I earn close to $75K a year (no OT just 40hrs a week) but I don't get paid vacation. I do get paid sick days and medical dental benefits.

Hiring CWs is not necessarily a positive indicator. They are compensated 1/3 of what an HP employee earns when you consider all benefits. This is merely a feeble cost-cutting exercise that rarely ends well. Eventually the CWs are cut and the job sent to an off shore provider for 1/3 the CW rate. Of course quality and productivity go down the drain, and it is not a sustainable long term solution.

And there was much rejoicing.
