Live Lectures

How’s it going with the 90 minute live lectures? Any purely-online VPs doing this? Have you had any student feedback (positive or negative)?

Sept will be my first time teaching since the implementation of this requirement, and I’m honestly thinking about skipping it and letting he chips fall where they may. For the type of courses I teach, the “busywork” that this creates-for students and for me- seems to outweigh the beneficial. Curious to hear others’ thoughts.....

1dhx...probably too late to have this discussion, since the management system at DeVry has historically been a classic example of institutional inbreeding. But, when they do a post mortem of DeVry, this might help inform the analysis:

I am a VP in a similar boat as some of these posters. I was thinking about sending a quick survey to my online students this week and asking if they would like a live lecture to be required as part of the course. When they say no, I will keep those responses to justify how I actually AM tailoring my teaching to meet their needs. If they do want live lectures, I’ll do that too... right after I pick my jaw up from off the floor.

I have refused to do the Live Lectures. Combined with tripling class size and no raise for 10 years, these lectures are an abuse of my time. BTW poor reviews are simply providing documented justification for when the time comes - and it will be soon - to fire full-time people because there are no more customers taking classes. You have to ask yourself what kind of person Burks is by staying with a collapsing, unethical company and acting as a hit squad leader for people who are trying to make the best of a deeply flawed situation. You might write a letter asking Burks to turn out the lights when she becomes the last person out the door.

"Letter of Concern" added to your file? You should write your own letter in rebuttal and insist it be included in your file. What an indignity. If you're a full timer, you are treated as an adjunct. Oh, and btw, the plight of adjuncts everywhere is appalling–low piecemeal salaries, no benefits, no respect....they are disposable bodies.

Burned: shame on your direct supervisor for allowing the “OnLive Enforcement Tribunal” within the eternally misguided CTE to have so much influence in your overall rating, and what an insult to your professional judgment. You’re probably a good teacher, know your course content, and made a wise call, based on acumen and experience, to reduce the implementation of the OnLive piece in the specific scenario you described. And yet, people who don’t know your area or coursework, and seem to have little experience with requirements analysis and project management, are driving this one-size-fits-all irrelevant OnLive monster. Meanwhile, I’m afraid your boss is just building a file to use against you (same with the rest of us) filled with misapplied metrics and letters of concern. There’s indeed a need here for a letter of concern, but it’s totally unrelated to your teaching. There’s plenty for faculty to be concerned about at this “university.”

are any VPs doing it?

What's up with time-card? Is Devry now paying per hour contracts?

If you skip, be prepared for the wrath of Burks. I had a conversation with my 6 regular instead of a regular lecture, and after she watched the recording, she reported me to my dean for not giving a regular lecture. Then, I got a letter of concern put into my file, received the worst category on my review despite a solid year of receiving 4’s for all sections from my students and publishing a book and a journal article.

Explain the "time-card requirement" please. Are you to now have to account for you time? Before I quit, I was well above 40 hours per week. So, does DeVry suspect you of being do-nothings???? I'm so sorry for my full- and part-time colleagues who have to suffer the daily disrespect they are shown.

Hi, I plan to skip as well. A complete waste of time. Of course this gives us more to add to our weekly timecard :) By the way , what does everyone think about the new timecard requirement?
