So why all the secrecy about all the store closings? What are they afraid of?

Riots, theft, a walk out of employees, disgruntled people, fights, arguments etc..... It's not an easy announcement. Plus there's more to come. Majority of Kmart stores are on the chopping block... Just look at the pattern.
Every time another Sears closes there's another article about what a massive failure of a j–koff Eddie is, and his ego can't take it.
Buying the company for its real estate. Slick Eddie led Judge Drain to believe it was all about saving jobs. What a bald face lie.
Because they don't want you to know they are liquidating the company till after January
As a private company, Eddie doesn't feel the need to make announcements
This is so reminiscent of prior years under Sears Holdings ... come out with a big list, then follow up with scattered closings, one, two or three at a time. All Eddie's handiwork at ppay.
