Thread regarding Juniper Networks Inc. layoffs

Juniper Doesn't Care About Inside Talent

I'm a loyal American to the company that hires me. I have and will always work hard no matter the job given to me. I have been with this company for so long, I have built so many amazing relationships internally and with customers. I was screwed over a year and a half ago when I was promoted - managers kept promising me that they'd comp me correctly. It never happened. 6 months ago it was either get laid off or move to another group. I took a 20k hit moving because frankly I love this company and I love what I do. I find out an opportunity for promotion again with another group at a grade scale 2 grades higher and they don't want to comp me that much. So what's the difference between someone with little to no Juniper experience coming in and starting at that base scale vs someone who's loyal and hardworking who has 10+ years Juniper experience?

Juniper, you really don't give a sh– anymore about the very few vets you have left, do you?

Cisco has always been great in training its people. No doubt.

The only problem with Cisco is that they have annual layoffs of 5-7% as they realign businesses. If you're in the wrong group it could cost you (i.e. data center will soon be hit hard at Cisco).

Even though Cisco is way better than Juniper in the layoff dept., for your next move choose a company that's growing and doesn't fire for peace of mind, like Salesforce, Microsoft or whatever.

@kulk, since when did Juniper ever gave free training materials? I worked there for fifteen plus years and never heard such a thing. Getting Junos training cost $$$ to your manager.

Yes it’s sad that Cisco makes its training material accessible to their employees for no charge.

Juniper does not even care to educate motivated engineers any more. I was denied by my manager to get Junos training, as he responded that there's a lack of budget and that we all needed to work overtime for upcoming projects. It's just sad. Juniper used to provided Junos training materials for free to its employees, but now even employees are charged by Juniper Education department. This is very different than my friends at Cisco, where they encourage everyone to take Cisco networking classes. After I get my bonus, I'm gonna leave for Cisco or some other place that values its employees.

I decided to focus on learning Blockchain and IoT and other technologies that will help me land a job somewhere else. Even if Juniper does not give me an opportunity to grow, I can go somewhere else or return home, to China. I suggest the same – learn new things to help your career. Don't worry about Juniper anymore.

Are there any really good engineers still left under AA or has he really run them all off as people are saying on these work boards?

@107dXlzE-cccv, don't you wish you could make one phone call to get ICE and FBI agents to investigate this shady hiring practices, such as getting cheap contract labor (usually from India)?
They have contract workers, employed through these contract shops, usually setup by immigrants who have inside connections to get their contractors hired. They are exploiting the system. Some contract shops are even helping workers with expired visas move to Canada so they can work for US companies from there.

@107dXlzE-cccv Experience tells me that it's group specific. You can find groups that'll internally hire up. HR won't know. Each HR person is their own island of "policy" and salary giver. They can be sensible or they can be fools.

Cisco used to be like this where they said you couldn't be title promoted by moving internally. It was a reason why tons of people left. So Cisco changed that stupid policy.

If you encounter any environment that won't promote from internal transfer and if that policy is company wide, then it's time to GTFO of there.

But WHY are you entertaining an internal transfer?! Haven't you be reading the threads here?!

Please punch yourself in the face.

The job I applied to is all non-americans. They offered me the lowest of lowest pay... -.- like the absolute base they could give someone. Also, the only American that would be joining so guess what, extra work for me if I have to deal with customers that are Government based. Their excuse was that I should be grateful because all internal moves are lateral. Right. Then please tell me someone who has the same education as me with only 1 year juniper experience on the product makes more than me with 10 years? my mind is blown. I've started sending my resume out. I'm done. The only reason I'm sticking around right now is because my current manager treats me right and with the knowledge that i have for and from this job, I'm making what i should be making... but the job I tried to apply for... what they offered is a complete slap in the face.

There's a lot of reverse discrimination going on for sure. It's like affirmative action on steroids.

The board is useless and cannot change the CEO or any leaders of the company.
The discrimination and toxic behavior will not change without HR leadership that is fearless and ruthless in taking on this leadership team head on, but without the backing and sponsorship from one or more board members, that's unlikely.
So, all this bullshït will go on. Cast, Creed, Age, S-x, Education, Race, Religion, Ethnic Origin, and whatever else will be used to judge you and discriminate against you. And yes, all this discrimination will continue, untill many good people without the golden handcuffs, friendships and alliances will eventually leave for one reason or another. The talent pool will drop as already witnessed here at Juniper.

So what can you do?
This is what I recommend you do while you are still employed at Juniper:
Get all the education, certification, accreditation and meditation that you can stand.
Ignore the toxic people around you and do the bare minimum at your work to stay employed. This may even be your friends, co workers, friends, team members etc ... And this is why meditation will help. Ignore them. Minimize your interaction with negativity. Stay positive for yourself and yourself alone.
Focus on improving yourself, not others. Focus on yourself. Not Juniper. Do what is best for you.
Update your resume. Apply for jobs. Be happy and content. Look out for yourself.
Good luck and all the best.

Confirm wih the satements 100%. Juniper is not teh comany anymore it used to be. Strategical mistakes, missing the train like SDN and a situation where politicians and non-achievers get promoted, while other ones that have built this company are kicked out. Wiht that the short sighted company tries to save some cost short term. But the effect of the talent and knowledge they lose mid and longterm, will have an even more negative impact which the decision maker do not even understand. I also think that the board of directors do truly not know what is going on inside the company.

And the outcome can be clearly seen in the company results and especially the stock price. Just compare Junipe vs CISCO or any otehr for the past 2-3 years while the entie IT industry has been booming like crazy!

I can only say: Poor investors (!) who bet their millions of dollars on Juniper. Had you invested in the rigth IT companies, you would have doubled your money in 2-3 years. With Juniper, you are where you were 3 years ago! My urgent advice...walk away. This is not going anywhere...

Unfortunately, this is truly what happens in Juniper. Maybe it happens elsewhere as well, especially in Bay area. Worse is, the ones practicing this know this is not correct, but they have their own agendas and priorities. And they will "train" you to be numb eventually.

RR needs to get the fück-out, if not, the board needs to chase his áss out, together with the horse he rode in on.
There are many more RR faithfuls that need to be chased out with him too - CMO, MM. CPO, AA. Sidekick, AG and many more. The list is long. We all know.

There is no other way to salvage this company.

The can't promote someone two grades makes zero sense. I'm sure some HR website says it's a best practice but honestly...what's the bigger risk: hiring an unknown or letting an internal super-star jump a grade? I mean seriously, what are HR people doing....

haha yep I'll never be anything like AA. Plus I'm not Indian so theres that... which I already knew this company was Indian focused.

RR needs to go... dude if you're reading this - please do this company a favor while it's on its last legs and just step down... I've been praying for this for the last few years and its still not happening. We'll never get back to the culture we had when KJ was CEO... I mean, hello - our founder went and started his own company - that should be a sign that even our founder is pretty disappointed without having to say so. This SDN movement was and is a flop. Time to bring old school Juniper back before we go under.

The people who just came on board working for teams under AA’s org get promoted to manager, sr manager, director in less than a year.

So if you are not like AA then forget about being noticed for your talent or getting a promotion.

Sorry to hear! I've heard the same from many other old school Juniper folks with the same issue and they left as well and have been much happier after taking the leap. Sounds like it's time for you to get out and shine elsewhere!
