Read on this board, but also heard that about 200 associates were lt go. Is there any truth to this? Seems like a big number to me, to go under the radar.

Yes it did happen in the US and I know someone who was let go just like that after 20+ years. They where there during a meeting then 2 days later gone.
I've been laughing about this one for several days now. No wonder Wal-Mart had to lay people off in a department whose soul purpose is to make sure the company behaves in an ethical manner! Nobody in management cares if the company behaves in an ethical manner! The almighty dollar is their god.
Bring in the bucks by any means possible.

Was it the international branch of ethics and compliance that approved all the illegal payments in the international bribery scandal that the company just paid $288 million to settle and try to bury?
Which branch is responsible for Tom Coughlin?
Who is responsible for the fiasco last year when they had employees arriving to work at closed Sam's Clubs the same day they announced meaningless hourly pay raises for all their employees whose hours had just been reduced?
Did somebody in the ethics and compliance office write the computer algorithms they used to terminate long term pharmacy employees?

Wal-Mart does not have an ethics only department. It’s technically “Ethics&Compliance” with the compliance arm being much bigger then the ethics portion

So was the ethics department kind of like the area that tried to put a positive spin on all the c-appy stuff they did to everyone who worked for and/or with the company? You, know one of those "check your conscience at the door, because you've got to sell your soul to the Devil to try to justify all the BS this company pulls"?

Yes, it's true. US Ethics & Compliance at the HO. Don't know if International was affected. It happened the first week of July. I was shocked no one had mentioned it.
Working in Ethics at WalMart. Why in the hell would this company need an Ethics department???? Isn't this this same company that just paid out almost 300 million dollars to settle an international bribery scheme and has been using sleazy tactics to lose their longest tenured employees? Isn't this the same company that gave us Tom Coughlin? Isn't this the same company that closed an entire store in Jonquiere, Quebec rather than negotiate in good faith with their own employees? Didn't they just close a bunch of Sam's Clubs by just locking the doors and letting employees show up to work under false pretenses? Didn't they just lay off 40% of their senior pharmacist staff?
Ethics office at WalMart. The Maytag repairmen of the company. Not much call for their services.
