Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

The technology of the back office is way behind the times, but the company had always taken a mindful approach to technical advancement and how they spent policy owners money. Remember - this is a mutual company, not a stock company. When Schlifske gave the reins to LV leadership, I don't think they understood the highly integrated and dependent nature of the systems, nor did they understand the significance of the regulatory constraints NM operates under, evidenced by the CSO project being a lower priority than our web presence and putting our ability to sell products at risk. By letting go so many people over the last 4-5 years, they have lost so much experience and wisdom. But why wouldn't anyone speak up and tell the leaders of these things? Simple - they were and are now afraid for their jobs. The culture is turning into a bunch of "yes" people who are only looking out for themselves and who are willing to throw anyone under the bus to save themselves.

And since this original post, several executive female leaders have "left" the company. NM is frighteningly good about managing the media.

Saying that the technology is light years behind is a very broad statement. What specific technology is needed to meet the needs of the business? NM doesn’t need a Cray super computer. There’re always many technology options to solve issues, create value, and sometimes to save money (hopefully). The latest and greatest in programming languages or technology doesn’t always equal value to the business or clients.

NM is a joke in Milwaukee. No one in their right mind would go to work there anymore. They pretend to be an investment co. but they can't get their act together. All of the flowery language about 'planning' is old news. The idea isn't new & their technology is light years behind . LearnVest didn't help one bit. They are the primary reason why costs had to be cut at NM. Strategic Expense Management was about letting people go who are older to save on salaries & benefits so they could pay younger New York LearnVest employees. The new NM Tower was supposed to attract young millennial's to Milwaukee as a technology hub. But, NM hires people in New York who wouldn't think of moving to Milwaukee. They just want the massive frequent flyer miles & expense accounts.
