Broadcom shares fell Wednesday after Sen. Rand Paul called for a review of the company's proposed merger with CA Technologies.

Shares of Broadcom extended earlier losses and were down more than 3 percent in morning trading. CA Technologies fell nearly 3 percent by 10:45 a.m. in New York.

Paul called for a review of the proposed $19 billion merger during a Senate hearing on homeland security.

It would be the second major challenge to a Broadcom merger this year. President Donald Trump blocked the chipmaker's proposed deal with Qualcomm in March, citing national security concerns within the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.

"If [CFIUS] were looking at Broadcom previously, just because Broadcom has changed their domicile to [the U.S.] doesn't mean we shouldn't still look at Broadcom," Paul said, addressing Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen.

@VzPblP0-mlb, don't be so sure. Nation security is a "Trump" card that is and has been used numerous times to override both Federal law and the US Constitution. If the DOJ and DHS want to block the merger, they will find a way to do it. If anything, they'll just get an injunction and it will be years before the SCOTUS makes a ruling. By then CA will either be history or bought by someone else.

The first thought that crossed my mind is how the US senate approved this acquisition.

Broadcom is pure hardware company that develops modern analog and digital communication chips.

By acquiring CA Tech , it could directly get data from Horses mouth.

CA's mainframe tech is deployed in power companies, telecommunications , Nuclear reactors , hospitals , what not. In fact 490 of the Fortune 500 companies uses CA tech in some or the other way.

CIFUS should have thought about this on before Aug end itself.

And coming to Hock E. Tan , he is behaving as if he already bought CA.

By visiting CA offices across the globe , what does he want to show?

Hope good sense prevails and Anti trust approval for EMEA on October 17 should think deeply before giving the green flag.

The simple fact of the matter is Sen Paul is grandstanding by asking for an investigation.

CFIUS has no jurisdiction to open an investigation in this instance.
